Rice ED?? freaking out =(

sorry I'm a newbie at this, just trying to follow the format I've observed-

GPA: weighted 4.59, 5.0 scale- don't know unweighted
Rank: 51/750, 7th percentile
SAT(old) - 800 Verbal, 760 Math
SAT(new) - 800 Verbal, 800 Math, 750 Writing
SATII - 720 World History, 800 Writing, 800 Biology-E, 800 Math IIC
ACT(without writing)- 36 composite (35 math section)
I didn't send the ACT score because Rice doesn't accept the old ACT without writing.. but I did put it in my app.. see "other factors" at the bottom as well.
PSAT: 240 (question: will colleges see this and/or consider it in my app?)

Grades: Mostly low to mid-range A's and high B's, exception of one high C in second semester pre-AP Chemistry sophomore year and a couple of very high A's in some honors classes.

AP Courses taken:
Four years of core courses (math, english, social studies, science etc) all AP; all electives have been AP except for track.

Senior classes: AP Music Theory, AP Compsci AB, AP Calc BC, IB Chinese 5, AP English 4, AP Govt/Macroeconomics, Debate 3 Honors, track&field
all solid A's so far, midyear report should be better than my jr. year grades

APs Taken:
World History (5), Biology (5), Physics (3), US History (5), English Lang(5)

Extracurrics / Community Service:
NHS (12) -- tutoring/community service projects
Science Connection science-related club -- tutoring bio, journal editor, tutoring head
TAKS tutoring (12) -- basically I sacrifice a class period to tutor freshmen and sophomores who need help with math & passing the texas standardized test
[i do a LOT of tutoring]
Buddhist Club (12) -- secretary

Debate (10,11,12) -- Varsity all 3 years
Piano -- since 6 yrs old
Swim team (8-12) -- outside of school
Track & Field (10,11,12) -- varsity 11th & 12th

there's other stuff but that's the main gist of it.

Awards:
National Merit Semi-finalist
AP Scholar with Distinction
various debate awards
2 at State in piano solo

Other factors to consider:
-I'm an asian-american girl.. half white/half asian which did play into the essay about cultural perspectives quite a bit.
-prospective Biology major in lieu of pre-med
-OK essay, great interview, one OK recommendation (i think) and one good one from the director of a summer program at Oxford University I went to
-I'm from Houston and, in fact, live about 5 minutes from Rice: + or -? I've also been in the newspaper for my ACT and PSAT scores a couple times recently, would the admissions officers have seen this and would it help in my app for name recognition and such?
-I have partial legacy.. my dad went there for grad school majoring in space physics but dropped out after a year to start his own business.

Personally I think Rice is a bit of a stretch for me with my grades but I want to hear what you guys think. Thankyousomuch =)

Other colleges I'm applying to:
Bates, Wash U. in St. Louis, UPenn, Williams, Columbia, Princeton, Univ. of Texas @ Austin

Your rank isn't the greatest, but your standarized testing scores surely make up for it. (You were only a NMS semi-finalist?!)

I'd say you are in. :)

well i get notified about whether or not I have finalist standing in february or so.. so i guess i should have put "so far".. haha, hopefully.

Congrats on the test scores! I also think that you're in.

You have a better chance than I do. Did you apply to the school of Natural Science?

oops, i forgot to mention that- yes i did.

also, I'm 2 years young for my grade: i'm 16 right now and a senior- will that have any bearing? I know I was rejected from a private school i applied to because they wanted everyone to be the same age.

man, how are you not number 1? yeah u'll definitely get in or i die.

You're way above the cut line. Unless you can't write at all, I'm pretty sure you're in.

lol maybe i'm just paranoid > < well, we'll see after this weekend.

If you applied ED, your position is even better.

looks like wrxstiav dies =p
i was denied.. guess GPA/grades counted for a whole lot more than I thought they did.. or maybe my essay just sucked horribly and I didn't know it?
sigh I'm kind of confused.. esp cause it was my dream school and all.. it really hurts but i'll live.

Jesus. Maybe you're right, sometimes scores aren't everything.

But you should of at least been deferred.

Woah...you were rejected outright?

Interesting....

I guess the good old GPA counts for more than I thought it did.

Wow denied?
thats odd
sorry to hear

where else are you aplying?
I'm also from houston (=

hahah that seems to be everyone's reaction.. "that's quite odd.." i was personally pretty surprised cause everyone i'd talked to said i was fine.
oh and correction my gpa is 4.59 on a 4.0 scale not a 5.0 scale, around maybe 4.7 or so unweighted

Bates, Wash U. in St. Louis, UPenn, Williams, Columbia, Princeton, Univ. of Texas @ Austin
(i think all reaches except for UT now, based on this decision.. rrgh)
