Hi everyone, my name is Andrew and Rice has been my one of my top choices, better yet, my dream school. I really really wanted to go to Rice University because I'm drawn to its friendly and open environment. I'm currently a junior in a non-competitive poor high school, with a 3.8 GPA and currently (and hoping to raise) a 1610/2400 SAT. However, I'm really let down because I'm pretty sure my mediocre stats would give me little chance of getting in. But I'm starting to learn about the university itself and surf their site, gather information and email them. I really wanted to show the college that I am genuinely interested to Rice. Somehow, I was thinking that the only way that I could show my eagerness is to apply ED.

Which leads me to my question. Will applying ED to Rice hurts my chances with F.A.? I'm from a low income family <30k and I'm aware of how Rice meets 100% need and no loans for that type of income. Sure, I have a great chance of being rejected, but maybe applying ED or EA will maybe lower that rejection chance?

Rice really is generous with fin aid. However, ID at Rice gives pretty much the same boost as ED and it's nonbinding. You might want to post this on the Rice board. I know there are at least a couple posters who applied ED who needed lots of fin aid.

Applying ED to Rice does you you more a boost than ID, ID is nonbinding and hardly gives you a boost at all.

Your SAT score is quite low, that is going to be a major problem. However, if you come from a family that makes less than $30,000, Rice does guarantee that they will cover the cost, no loans. So in this instance, you don't have to worry about Financial Aid, just getting in. So definitely go ED, it is a huge reach, but it is your best chance of getting in.

You REALLY need to raise that SAT, unless you have an 800 Math and 400 verbal and writing. I'm not sure ED will make much of a difference. To show them your interest, you should visit, interview, take a tour, and write a letter to Rice. However, I'd apply, because you have a 0% chance of getting in if you don't apply, and you have a chance if you do. Good luck :)
