Rice ED vs. NYU ED

Hey guys, I have visited both of these schools and think they would be a fit for me. Problem is, that I only get one ED. ( Does Rice have ED2???)

Here are my stats, and I think both schools are high matches according to people I have asked, so maybe you guys can help me figure out which one I should ED in. I am currently a Junior.

GPA- 4.4 (W) 3.5 (UW)
Rank- Top 10% Weighted
SAT II's- US History- 750 Mathematics IIC- 780 Spanish w/ Listening- 750

School type: Public (450 kids)
Ethnicity: Pakistani
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Need FA, but put as secondary

Thanks! Be brutally honest! I am majoring in Economics and Mathematics. Possibly with a language minor if everything works out.

So, now that you guys have looked at my stats, maybe you can help me figure out whether I should ED with Rice or NYU CAS. I love both schools, I am currently leaning towards NYU because my relatives reside in Manhattan, but I have family in Texas too.

I would go for Rice. Rice is much better than NYU (by a long shot) so if you are fine with Rice, then I’d apply there

Problem is: Do I have a shot?

If you write a good essay and get some good recommendations that show your character and talent for your application, you’d definitely have a shot.

Your ACT score is in the middle 50% of Rice acceptees, your class rank is in the top 10% which is what Rice wants, you have very good extracurricular and athletic activities that demonstrate leadership and you are taking AP’s which shows that you are taking a challenging high school curriculum.

If you can get really good grades the first 2-3 months of the year, I definitely think you have an excellent shot. Good luck!

Thank you very much pierre0913

Bump

Take Rice as your ED for sure.

Good luck! You have a strong chances.

Rice- it is a wonderful college experience and you have a great shot.

Well college experience aside:

Will I get that ibanking job if I do get into Rice? Because I mean NYC is laden with opportunities.

Definitely Rice! In terms of opportunity, NY might have a sliiiiight edge because of the financial industry, but both NY and Houston will give you great opportunities. Houston is second behind NYC in F500 companies headquartered there, but Texas has more total. Either way you will be fine. That being said, I think Rice will give a better college experience.

And as for the ED, Rice only has ED now, they eliminated their interim decision program.

I like Rice better

Hmmm. It is still a tough situation. I feel both schools are good academically. However, NYU is renown for their economics program. (top 10) I don’t know about Rice’s economics program though. sigh

i really don’t think rice is better than NYU Econ at all.

what if you decide to change your major? if it’s close enough, Rice is good for basically everything

My parents want me to go to NYU because it is close to family. I think that is where I might ED. I also have a lot of connections because of family on wall street, so I don’t think I exactly want to give those up, but rather play them up since I will be so close to wall street. I also grew up in Brooklyn, so it will feel like home sweet home. I am also pretty liberal, and Texas just seems like hillbilly conservative country to me, although I have heard students in Rice are relatively liberal which would be a breath of fresh air lol. This is one tough decision, and I am no where close to choosing a school. I think I have found a general principle on CC:

Students respect Rice much more. It is funny that I never hear that NYU CAS is overrated anywhere other than CC.

Rice is not conservative at all and is in a very nice part of Houston. If you really feel that way about Texas, then why is Rice even on your radar. Please do your ED at NYU.

Look at US News and read other guidebooks, Rice is rated above NYU in almost all of them

MomofWildChild- I never said students at Rice were conservative, and Rice is on my “radar” because I visited the school, but didn’t have time to do a professional tour and really liked the general atmosphere. I agree with you that it is in a very nice part of Houston, and that the campus is the best I have seen yet. It is just that Texas is always a red state is all, and I grew up with democrat ideals. I just feel like this is a really tough situation.

NYU:

Has arguably the most opportunity laden city in the world
Is world renown for Economics
On the bad side there is no traditional college feel, and no gleaming campus to look at even if you feel Washington square park is a campus

Rice:

Is more well-rounded, and if I decide not to fulfill an economics major, there are plenty of amazing majors to go into.
Has the best campus I have ever seen.
cons: Houston is not as good as NYC, and only a small part of my family lives in Texas.

Texas is a very big state and Houston is not red. I would take Houston over NYC, personally, but I am not a fan of the northeast. (grew up in the NE, spent 28 years in Texas as an adult)

Rice is better academically, but NYU has a better location. I’d go for Rice though.

Hmmm, yes that helps if Houston is not red. I feel really confused. No doubt, these two are my two favorite schools by far. And I also feel that I am running out of time. I need to make sure I sell myself pretty well to these schools, and I have until the end of july to finish in time for my Citibank internship lol.
