how are rice engineering grads looked upon by employers? Is the ugrad engineering program say... not as good as Umich or Cornell? Or is it just.. not as well known? (back in my country.. no one has really heard of Rice except for its Archi program and Music school..)

I don't know about the whole US, but in the southeast Rice is well known for excellence in engineering and looked on very favorably by employers. My cousin is with Shell Oil Co. and says that Shell loves engineers from Rice. In fact, I think Shell has some kind of relationship with Rice's chemical engineering dept. If you were trying to get a job in the northeast, esplly in NY, then Cornell might have the advantage, but I do detect a fair amount of interest in Rice from kids in the northeast, so they have at least heard of it.

Rice is very well known for its engineering. My son is a senior (EE). The "career fair" stuff starts early in fall semester. He had a an excellent job offer before Thanksgiving -- to start summer after graduation.
I am in metro Washington, DC. When the conversation goes to where kids are in college and I say, "my son is at Rice" the response is almost universal, "Oh, is he an engineer?"
Rice was my son's first choice.

im in my second year at Rice as a Mechanical Engineer. I will be in a Co-Op program with Shaw Group (Google It) for 3 semesters in Houston. I will be paid 25k per semester and will get a 5k signing bonus. Its all there, you just have to put forth the effort to get it and once you find it, it will be well worth it.

cANDYman, is that azmount typical for most engineers who coop at Rice?
