The quality of Rice's academic life and Residential College System is heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice?

I don't understand what the question is really asking? What does it mean by what 'perspective'?

It is pretty broad…so any definition you’re given might limit your approach. But I would suggest that it’s something along the lines of how you view the world around you.

To get started, you could think about things like: how you deal with other people, how you deal with problems, what you appreciate in life, what you don’t appreciate in life

Think of it this way – Rice wants to create a diverse group of students. What makes you different that could add to the diversity at Rice? It could be your background, your interests, the way you approach problems, etc.

While I cannot tell you specifically what is “weighted” more (I am a freshmen at Rice, but on the Student Admissions Council) because I do not know–think about it more like this, someone is handed your application and reads through the entire thing. They do not read one essay with more interest than the others, they are all read to give the reader a more general picture of who you are. The Rice essay is very important though, Rice wants its residential college system to flourish, and that is done by people who have something to contribute through their “perspective”. Just write about what you think people will find interesting about you! Good luck.

The essay is your chance to let them know who you are and how you can contribute to Rice. What makes you you? How are you more than numbers? What has influenced you and what can you add to Rice? How will you help fulfill their mission to develop “a broadly diverse student body where educational diversity increases the intellectual vitality of education, scholarship, service and communal life at Rice.”

As for what is weighted more -

“Our evaluation process employs many different means to identify these qualities in applicants…An applicant’s entire file is considered and each applicant is considered in competition with all other applicants.”
