Rice Fall 2015 Transfer

I just got accepted!!! Oh I wanna cry!!! definitely Rice, then

@elizayp ohhhh congrats! And the same to myself hahaha! Hope to see you there in August.

@Miyamoto Congratulations! am still waiting… Can I know which major you applied to?

Congrats to everyone who was accepted! I was accepted as a transfer student last year and it has absolutely been the best choice to transfer to Rice (don’t listen to the engineering guy who doesn’t like Rice, there will always be a few people who don’t like a school, but overall everyone I’ve met loves it). Please let me know if y’all have any questions, I’m also advising during orientation week in August so I’m hoping to meet you all then!

@Brian0129 Sure. Mechanical Engineering.

@Springg1994 Thank you! Will decline other schools once my Rice portal changes, also ready to hear a lot of “y’all”.

@Miyamoto see you in August! has your status been updated ? mine is still waitlist and I cannot pay the deposit now. So worried! besides, I applied for School of Scocial Science

In case you guys need another opinion and some reassurance, I agree completely with @Springg1994 (sorry to steal your thunder). Also transferred last year and I can honestly say I had by far the best year in college and that perhaps for the first time in my life, was actually sad when school ended for summer break. I’m advising during o-week so I’ll probably see some of you. Trust us, y’all are coming to a great place.

@Springg1994 I have a question, will there be an orientation for transfer students only? or will we attend the O-week with the incoming freshmen? it will be a pity if we won’t have O-week experience or hard to fit in @ChiGuy123

@elizayp It has not changed yet. Brandon said it would change “by tomorrow”, so should be fine. Honestly I cannot concentrate on my study for finals anymore because of this great news. Even though I have offers from a few other schools, most of them are in Australia.

@Miyamoto good to hear that! so you are from Australia? I am from China and I cannot focus on my finals , either

@elizayp No way! I’m from Chengdu, just studying in Australia. How about you?

@elizayp So you will be attending O-Week with all matriculating students (freshmen, other transfers, exchange students, etc). There are a few events during o-week that’ll get you to meet other transfers, but for the large majority of the time, you’ll be with other new students. It does sound weird that the first people you’re going to make friends with are probably not in your class, but don’t worry. I know the worst possible situation for a transfer is to not fit in after trying so hard to transfer. Believe me, I worried about that practically all last summer. But O-Week not only gets you to meet new students, it helps you meet upperclassmen because of all the advisors. Then during the school year, the residential college system does an absolutely phenomenal job at getting you to meet people from all classes. I don’t know of any transfer who isn’t happy of his/her decision to come here.

@Miyamoto I got asked the exact same two questions. I said Rice was my top choice and that the chance I would go was about a 98 percent. The guy calling me literally told me I was accepted after that. I was shocked that the answer came through phone.

Accepted off the waitlist and I’m honestly stunned. I basically gave up all hope after being waitlisted. Debating between Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, and Rice now. I love Rice so much, but it’s so far from home and the cost of attendance is a couple thousand more than Vandy. Sighhh…

@ElmerChelmo Congratulations! What do you study? Where are you transferring from?

Maybe the questions are just for waitlisted students they are inclined to admit; otherwise the questions would have been in the waitlist reply form and available for all of the waitlisted. Good strategy to pull up its yield though.

@Miyamoto Thank you! study Mathematics and I’ll probably be doing a minor in Statistics. I’m transferring from Miami University in Ohio. I’m originally from Cleveland, Ohio.

I actually thought I had no chance of being accepted considering my spring GPA was so much lower than my fall GPA. I do think I got in specifically because of my emails to admissions. If you’re still waiting for your decision, I have one really good piece of advice. After you’ve told them how interested you are and that Rice is your top choice, look on the Rice website for their description of what an ideal student is. I think it’s on the Future Owls site. They talk about the different qualities a Rice student possesses. Then send an email to admissions showing how you demonstrate each of those qualities with your activities or what you’ve accomplished. I’m positive that is what got me in, so hopefully it can work for you too and I can possibly see you down there.

@ElmerChelmo Thank you for sharing. Actually I’ve been off the list since 11, but I’m sure your comments will be very useful for future waitlisted applicants whoever is lucky enough to see your post!

When I was on the list, I sent them a love letter entitled “My Dear Rice”, in which I addressed Rice as “you”. Also I adapted the Rice Owl icon by adding a rose across its beak and used it in my letter. Intimate, creepy, but worked!

@Miyamoto Haha that’s amazing to hear! Yep, I guess a little creative work can really give an extra push toward acceptance. Congrats!

@ElmerChelmo Can you activate your NetID using Rice ID? https://mynetid.rice.edu/oams/app/setup/
Mine doesn’t work and the IT Help says that my account is not ready and that right now there is no NetID linked to my account.
