I got an email a few months ago that said my application fee was waived. so on the common app I selected "other fee waiver" and hit "continue" just like the email said. do I need to do anything else? or will it see that they sent me the email to give me the fee waiver?

Hi,

Can you tell me where you received the email from? My son had Rice as his first choice school and he is a National Merit Semifinalist. But he doesn’t recall receiving any emails. We are wondering how to claim the fee waiver.

Arutha, the email was from Julie Browning. I believe the fee waiver was based on AP scores. I think taking three or more AP tests and getting 4s or 5s was the criteria.

yeah, it was from Julie Browning, the Dean of Undergraduate Enrollment. it does seem to be based on AP tests. here’s what the e-mail said:

“As an additional reward for your hard work and success in AP courses, Rice will waive the $70 application fee normally required of all applicants. We are an exclusive user of the Common Application. To activate your application fee waiver from the Common Application website, go to the Payments section of your Common Application. For the Payment Method, select Other Fee Waiver Request, then click Continue.”

Actually, Arutha, that is weird, because I got this email from Julie Browning toward the end of July:

"Congratulations on your designation as a “High Scorer” on the PSAT, and thank you for listing Rice as one of your top two college choices with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

In recognition of your status as a “High Scorer,” Rice will waive the $70 application fee. This fee waiver has been added to your computer record at Rice.

Rice is an exclusive user of the Common Application. To activate your application fee waiver from the Common Application website, go to the Payments section of your Common Application. For the Payment Method, select Other Fee Waiver Request, then click Continue.

My staff and I look forward to getting to know you better throughout your senior year. Feel free to contact us whenever you have questions about Rice."

gnr1516: Yeah, I think we just select “other fee waiver” and then “continue.” They should have a file for all the people with fee waivers.

S is also an AP scholar with honors. But no emails regarding fee waiver. Wonder if he can just select ‘other fee waiver’ and hope they have his file?

Arutha,

I remember we received mail long time ago, my daughter also received email as she told me. It definitely worth calling the admission office to check. Why pay if it can be waived?

Definitely call the admissions office and ask about it.
