well it isnt the official acceptance letter. It is the financial aid award letter. I wonder did anyone apply for aid NOT get this letter.

I received this letter:

Thank you for submitting your CSS Profile to us by the deadline. The Office of Financial staff has carefully reviewed your CSS/PROFILE form. Based on the information provided, our analysis indicates that you are not eligible for need-based aid.
We recognize that college costs represent a major investment for you and your family. Rice does offer a deferred payment plan to allow families to pay each semester''s bill in four monthly installments.
Rice also participates in various loan programs that are available to assist you and your family with educational expenses. Such loans are not based on computed need and are available regardless of family income.
Should you have questions regarding your financing options, please know we have a financial aid counselor assigned to you who can help you examine those options. Please feel free to call us at 713-348-4958 or email fina@rice.edu .

It doesn't say 'congratulations on your admittance.' But does this mean I got into Rice? They wouldn't give me a financial aid letter if I wasn't accepted, right? What do you guys think? Has anyone who applied ED to Rice and to finanical aid not receive a letter?

hinthint: that's the same exact letter i got. this is torture :/ i had the same mindset as you about the whole inefficiency thing, but then i remembered that the finaid and admissions are totally separate processes...

I think it just means you make too much to qualify for financial aid

um, obviously it means that i don't qualify for finaid, but that's not the question i'm asking...

well I was initially answering lulu17. I'm not entirely sure. I mean if you make like 200k then obviously you know you make to much to qualify and you probably did get in. However, if you make like 40k and you did not get aid, then maybe not. I'm not entirely sure though like I said. I hope that everyone (I think most will) from CC will get in because generally, the kids here happen to be amazing students.

I think you are in! :) Congratulations!!!!! (My statement is not legally binding. ;) but I don't think you would have a financial aid counselor assigned to you to answer your questions if you weren't admitted!)
:)

yeah, I had a feeling I would not receive finaid. but I wish the letter had said the "congrats...!" that other people who received finaid had on their letter, just so that I can know for sure. I suppose I'll just have to wait till monday. Good luck to everyone and congrats to you guys who got into Rice!

well the counselor is the same for every letter...

we all Anne Walker the director of financial aid

umm. I would think that if you were in it would say something to the effect of

Congratulations on your admission to Rice University! Unfortunately, based upon the information provided on your CSS/PROFILE application, you are ineligible for any need-based financial aid for the 2009-2010 academic year. We recognize that college costs represent a major investment for you and your family. Rice does offer a payment plan to allow families to pay for each year in installments. Rice also participates in various loan programs that may be available to assist you and your family with educational costs.

Something like that. I dont know though. I would wait to see if anyone who did apply for it, did not get the letter meaning if you DID get a letter, then you are IN :)

i think the financial info was just sent to everyone who got into rice and made under the 60,000 or 80,000 threshold...

the ones who made more won't get decision yet because they can't pay for it...

My biggest worry is that since Rice is considered a "need-blind" college it meant that the admissions and financial aid offices do not share information. So the financial aid office probably does not know if you were admitted or not...

that's my biggest worry

yes even though it's kinda mean to be waiting for someone to get rejected, I think it does secure our admission

haha i know... it is so mean but we are all waiting for that.

I'm scared about thew hole need-blind thing though :(

If they are need-blind how would financial know you were accepted? Unless the admissions makes the decision, gives it to the financial, and they tell you

I am hoping that is how it works! And that they don't wait until Monday to change the status

It did say "congratulations on your admission" and if they took that back, that's just mean. haha

it would seem most logical that the admissions office would pick its' choices(without seeing any financial stuff) and then have those people be looked at by the fin aid office in order for the admission process to be need blind...though that is all speculation and we will just have to wait and see to be really sure....not trying to be a downer but let us not get too excited before we know everything

if the process for admission is split, then i don't think the financial aid office would have the jurisdiction to say "congrats on being accepted."

my guess is that the admin office already made its choice for who was getting in by last friday and gave the list to the financial aid office. the financial aid office probably looked at every applicant too, and if you were accepted by the admin office and required financial aid, then the financial aid office sent you a package today.

yeah I agree with hinthint. I think Rice accepts everyone they want, THEN they become considered for FA. Which is why they JUST began to look at FA stuff last week (I know because I was there and that's what they told me)

On the Financial Aid Requirements page (the page where you see the link to your letter):

Rice University administers a need-blind admission process, so your admission to Rice is not influenced by your financial background. [...] *Families completing the required forms by the deadlines posted on our website will be * given information about their financial aid package at or shortly after the time of admission. * *

Maybe those who applied for finaid and were notified of their finaid status (regardless whether or not they received aid) are admitted, but the admission status just hasn't been updated yet. Maybe I'm just being optimistic but it sounds like we were supposed to find out about finaid after or around the same time as finding out about our admission. Possibly, by mistake, the finaid status was updated before the admission status.

this is the first time the FA office has done electronic notification. Usually, a letter would come AFTER the acceptance email.

Just a note - when/if you do receive the acceptance email, historically it says, "your application for admission has been APPROVED." (They may have changed it this year, but if they haven't - "approved" definitely means "accepted")
And I'm still pretty sure that if you have received a financial aid package (even if it has no $ in it) you have been accepted. :)
