I'm going to be senior, and I'm really interested in Rice; however the price tag is obviously really high. I've been reading up on Rice's financial aid. It's saying that they'll cover your need with grants and workstudy, without loans if you have a low income family.
I want a clarification of what I would be looking at in my case.

My mom is a single mom making 45,000 in income. I'm first generation. My sister is currently also enrolled in University. Would I receive a good amount of aid at Rice? I will only be allowed to go if I get some sort of scholarship or grants. I have pretty good stats, I'm in the top 2% of my class, and I take a lot of hard classes and do a lot of extracurriculars and decent test scores. please help me out!

You should try using Rice’s Financial Aid Calculator. It should give you a general idea of the amount aid you’d be likely to receive.

They will also take into consideration your step-father’s (if applicable) income, your non-custodial father’s income (and your step-mother’s income - if applicable).

You might want to check out the financial aid forum. It won’t be Rice specific, but it will help you better understand the process.

I will say that Rice’s financial aid packages are generous.

Good luck!

I just graduated, but my mother is a single mother making ~45k, I was first gen at a four-year, and my sister is also enrolled in college. I got a full (merit-based) ride, but when one of my scholarships expired Rice continued to cover the same amount. I asked financial aid about it once and they said they’d have given me a full scholarship anyway. They didn’t even inquire about my father’s income as he’s entirely out of the picture.

Unless financial aid has changed drastically in the past few years, don’t worry!

silentsailor, I basically fall into the same category as you. My dad isn’t in the picture either. All we receive is child support… which he won’t even have to pay once I’m 18 anyway. This is good to hear, thanks!
