Rice football bowl game

Could somebody please give me a brief outline of Rice's bowl situation?

We are going to a bowl game, but we aren't sure which one yet. It will most likely be either Fort Worth on the 31st or Houston on the 30th of December.

Someone else can probably give better details.

As Eravial08 said, we're going to a bowl game for sure. There is a slight chance if we win today against UH and Tulsa loses, we will be the champions of the west! Then we'd play against ECU for the CUSA championship. That's a whole different story though. Otherwise, we're either going to the Armed Forces Bowl in Ft. Worth or the Texas Bowl in Houston.

Tuesday, December 30 at Reliant Stadium -- the Texan Bowl.

I better try again ... the Texas Bowl.

I can't believe that we might be playing Notre Dame. This is a strange moment for me.

Thanks for the info. Our son is in the MOB, and his godfather is from Notre Dame. We might be interested in the game.

Or at least the half time show

...now I desperately want to know who he is.

But I'm sort of glad that we're in the Texas Bowl - it means I don't have far to travel for the game.

Of interest only to MOB folks is the fact that Ken Dye is the director of bands at Notre Dame - he used to be in MOB and actually composed a large fraction of our arrangements.

I suspect you are asking who he is on this forum--As far as I can tell he doesn't post here-- at least no so i can recognize it.

Ken Dye wasn't just in the MOB. He was the director of the MOB. More specifically, Ken Dye was the director who made the MOB into the MOB. Before that, it was just the Rice Band.

When was he director of the MOB?

1980 through 1997. Sooo... Actually, I misspoke. Bert Roth was the director who brought the MOB into existence. He passed away a few years ago. Ken Dye was the one who tweaked the MOB into what it is now, though.

Looks like Rice will be facing Western Michigan in this bowl game.

Chris Del Conte, the athletic director got hoodwinked by the Texas Bowl officials, who seemed to intimate to him, when we accepted the bowl bid a week ago, that they had an inside track on getting Notre Dame. Even though there was no guarantee of ND, you have to think that that was the main reason we accepted the bowl bid so early. But since Arizona State lost to Arizona on Saturday, the Pac 10 didn't have enough bowl eligible teams, so they couldn't send a team to the Hawaii Bowl, one of the bowls they are affiliated with, so that slot became open, and Notre Dame took it, IMO largely for TV audience reasons, as they will be on ESPN (instead of NFL Network that the Texas Bowl is on) and they will be the only game on in that time slot. Nevermind the fact the Irish have to travel to Hawaii on the last day of their finals, they obviously don't care as much about the "student first, athlete second" mantra that belies their high US News ranking. Thank goodness that's not the case here at Rice.

Even if you can't make it to the stadium, today might be a good time to reserve the tv for Tuesday, think about snacks, check to be sure your favorite Rice t-shirt is out of the dryer...
