Rice for non-music majors

Rice gets great reviews in terms of student satisfaction and academic quality. My daughter does not want to pursue a career in music, but was thinking about double majoring in music and something else. That's not possible at Rice, which has a really elite music school. You can't even minor in music there. I have heard that non-music majors do have good opportunities to be involved in music, though, and I was wondering if anyone had information about that? From their website it looks like they have an orchestra for non-music majors. I'm wondering about other things-- zany acapella groups, other instrumental ensembles, etc. It appears that individual lessons are available and taught by grad students, which could be good or bad probably depending on the grad student.

Anyone have more information about how the music experience is at Rice if you're a non-major?

Thanks-

I don’t really have any answers for you other than this —

check out the MOB (Marching Owl Band) for a very fun musical experience! Google it.

Depending on the instrument, if you take private lessons at Shepherd as a non-music major, you can be taking lessons with a full professor, not just a grad student.

Campanile is the orchestra for non-music majors.

There is also a jazz band, a mariachi band, and a lot of a capella groups on campus as well.

Also, all of the residential colleges have music practice rooms where you are able to practice instruments without making too much noise (and so you don’t need to go to Shepherd to practice).
