I know this may sound stupid but for the rice interview(off campus), is formal dressing advised(shirt and tie) or can it be casual.......

same question ... I am wearing a suit, actually... mainly because I now own one

I would dress casually. Slacks are fine, but a tie would be unnecessary.

i wore a tie to mine and the interviewer made a comment about it. from what she said, i don't think it is necessary.

My d did quite a few interviews last year and most of the guys she encountered dressed casual-nice....button-down shirts, khakis, sweater if it's cold. She wore pin-striped wool slacks, high-heeled boots and a nice fitted white blouse or black turtleneck to her interviews most of which occurred in coffee shops. Her interviewers all came to the interviews casual...a couple even in scrubs. :-) I wouldn't wear jeans and tennis shoes, but I also wouldn't overdress.

Having spent many hours in the admissions office, and seeing quite a few interviewees last year, I would say that you should wear something a little nicer than what YOU would normally wear to school. For most guys, this is something like a polo shirt or button down with khakis. But if you are already the guy wearing the button down and khakis to school, you could wear the suit. For girls, generally a sundress, skirt and top, or nice pants and a top are good. I always thought it was best not to wear flip-flops, but people do it sometimes. The most important thing is that you are comfortable in what you are wearing. Better to be the nice, fun kid in the polo shirt than the really awkward kid in the suit.

Oh - and DON'T chew gum during your interview. I saw a guy do that once (not at Rice), and I was so shocked/grossed out.

My interviewer said that it would be informal, so I went casually dressed: in a polo shirt and khaki shorts. (A coincidence when I saw that he was wearing a polo shirt as well.)
