Rice is Stepping up Offering Housing to Healthcare Workers Amid Pandemic

Rice’s campus is located right across the street from Houston’s medical center. https://www.ricethresher.org/article/2020/04/covid-19-temp-housing

I think this is awesome! Healthcare workers need to be able to rest without risking the welfare of their families. It does, however, make me wonder if Rice is assuming remote learning will continue in the fall. Thoughts?

No indication of that so far. My daughter is an O Week advisor, and they are moving ahead with plans to welcome the new students. Of course, anything could change with the pandemic.

@Houston1021 Sooooo glad O Week isn’t cancelled! At least as of now, but a lot can happen between now and August 16th.

@Happy4u I was wondering the same thing about the fall. Do you think the college assignments will be mailed July 7th? Can you opt out of Wiess and Hanszen Colleges now?

How is Texas doing at social distancing? Google put together this report.

Why would you opt out of these colleges (and by the way you can’t)? I’d be careful reading too much online about which colleges are “best”. Sure, some are newer than others but I’m not sure that makes them better. In fact, I think many of the students at some of the “older” colleges feel like their colleges have more culture and traditions than some of the newer one. Students are assigned randomly to colleges which means that unlike the greek system, there is no REAL sense that one is better than the other. Students just like to give a hard time to students in other colleges. And while Hanzen is often critiqued for their facilities, they are getting a new building soon!

My daughter had read a negative comment about her college before being assigned. She was upset when she found out that’s where she would be living. Now, as a freshman, she LOVES it and can’t imagine living anywhere else! All students think their college is the best.

I am confident Rice will safeguard students’ health as their top priority. I don’t feel a need to “opt out” of residence halls. Time will tell how Texas handles this - fingers crossed the students can start as scheduled.

In general you can’t choose your residential college, The only exception is legacies can ask to be assigned to their parent/sibling’s residential college or ask NOT to be assigned to that residential college.

Just dawned on me that you’re probably commenting about the opting out of Weiss and Hanzen because that’s where the hospital staff are staying. I have NO doubt Rice will sanitize the heck out of those colleges prior to August!

I was thinking that the hospital staff might actually still need to use these dorms in the fall.
I’m sure they’d be safe and Rice wouldn’t allow students back if they weren’t.

I can’t imagine that happening. It would displace too many students who would have nowhere else to live.
