Rice/JHU

Right now, Rice and Johns Hopkins are my two favorites. I am trying to decide if I should apply early decision to either of them, but right now, i have not decided which one i like more. Anyone want to compare these schools?? (for someone majoring in physics or chemistry)

bumppppppppppp

If you like those schools perhaps you should look into Emory, Vanderbilt, and Georgetown too.

is georgetown good in sciences?

For the sciences and engineering wise, JHU is better than Rice.

One major drawback of JHU is the surrounding area, which I've heard is not too safe. On the other hand, Rice's area is much safer with Rice Village and Texas Medical Center (where you might want to do reasearch at one of the 13 hospitals).

rice is nice.

any more of a comparison academic wise??

You know you can apply interm decision to Rice right? Its basically EA but at a slightly later date, hope that helps.

rice has an awesome campus. jhu's campus=dull and ugly.

i would go to rice over jhu in a heart beat. the atmosphere, the weather, the housing system, are all better. the academics are pretty much equal in my mind.

Would not apply ED unless you have visited.

My suggestion is to visit both before considering ED at either one. It's best to consult current students (visit the Rice/JHU board) and talk to the staff at both places. Although I've never been to Rice I heard it was nice from my parents, who were just there. I will be attending JHU next fall. The homewood JHU campus is very nice and seems totally seperate from Baltimore. Academic wise they are both excellent institutions and the only MAJOR difference I can think of is that JHU has no core curriculum. Because there is no core curriculum, there is more room to pick classes you would enjoy taking, plus it is more feasible to obtain a double major. Good luck with your decision and remember you can't go wrong with either one.

Johns Hopkins.. no doubt! :)

oh, and the Hopkins campus is very nice... !

and btw, for the sciences it's hard to beat JHU's prestige and research ops

Hopkins is more prestigious.
Rice will give you more personal attention.
Hopkins area is not very safe.
Houston is kind of boring and the weather can be a downer.
Both are solid choices. I would go to Hopkins.
