Rice Merit Scholarhips?

I got accepted into Rice ED and congrats to everyone else who did too (good luck to those deferred). I didn't receive any financial aid as expected probably because my family income is 200k+. However, the acceptance packet listed merit scholarships that people could qualify for. When do they send those out?

I believe that merit scholarships were sent out with the acceptance notifications along with any financial aid information.

Congrats on being accepted!

I’ve heard two different things

 1. it comes in regular mail, along with everything else.
 2. you get it in a letter, at the same time that everyone doing regular decision gets their acceptances.

Although it seems extremely annoying, #2 sounds more likely since they most likely want to compare you to everyone else when they make their decisions.

Good Luck :)

I got it in a letter inside the blue package they mailed out, but it isn’t showing up on Esther…

premed4 - It is not #2. One can break the ED agreement if they are unable to pay for Rice. In order for applicants to make this decision, aid and scholarships have to be released early.

IIRC, Merit aid is included in your admission packet.

I didnt get any financial aid or merit aid info in my acceptance letter and it says no information is available for me on my Esther account  does this mean I didnt get any? Family income is a little over 80k…

FA might come out a little later. I would check with Rice, especially if your EFC is less than the total expected bill.

Called Rice and they said I submitted my info too early and it got put with the 2011-2012 school year info. I guess that’s what I get for being an overachiever :stuck_out_tongue: They are getting all of it moved to the right place and I should get financial aid info by next week. (:

Haha oops, not the best year for admissions :p

Got my financial aid info on esther (finally)!! 36k in grants, 2500 in student loans, and 2500 for work study (: As I said before, my family income is around 80k and I have an older sister in college for anyone wondering.

Also, I was wondering if I can count on getting around the same amount in grant money every year or if the amount could go down…

And what are some of my options for on campus work study? I would really like to be a campus tour guide, but I wasn’t sure if that would be something I could do freshman year…

If your parents income remains about the same and your older sister is in college, it should stay the same (on par with your EFC). If your sister graduates, your aid will likely drop. Your parents will not pay more in total, just the money that was going to your sister will now be used for you.

You can inquire, it depends on how many people they have.

Other options include working at the library, doing paid research, working in a lab, working for coffeehouse/the hoot/bookstore. I worked for the Housing department for my time there.

@ricehopeful2012- This has been our fa experience at Rice (son is a junior), his aid has remained steady more or less. The amount we pay is about the same, even with the increase in costs.

As far as student employment- it is abundant. My son has reffed for IM sports for 3 years, writes for the Thresher ($15/article) and now works an additional job elsewhere on campus. He gets work study money too. The rec dept doesn’t seem to care about it. His other job does.

Got my folder in the mail today, no merit aid for me, unfortunately.

@antarius and brooklyninOh - Thanks! I guess I’ll just have to wait until it gets closer to August to see what jobs are open.

@iwantthis - I haven’t received any merit aid info, so I guess I didn’t get any either. :/

^ There are plenty of jobs, so don’t worry about it. Some jobs give preference to FWS, so you will have a wide selection of positions.

quick question about financial aid. My parents’ combined gross income is <80,000 but my sister lives with us and her modest income pushes it over 80,000. When I received my aid package, I was awarded with 2500 in loans. I was under the impression that since my parents income is less than the 80 mark, I would not be given loans. Do they take into account my sisters income as well?

does her income count as family income on your tax returns/FAFSA?

Sorry to hijack the thread but I had a question concerning FA:

My sister is going to law school next year (currently in grad school). Is our aid affected by this at all? I was just wondering since my family income is also around 80,000 but we only received around 20,000 in aid.

I am not sure about the financial aid implications of professional schools. In most cases, your EFC remains constant, as in your parents pay x USD out of a salary of y USD. If two children are in school, they will pay x/2 to each. If one graduates, they pay x USD for the remaining one.
