Well, recently I have kind of been considering applying to Rice or Dartmouth ED. However, I am kind of vacillating between the two. My dad seems to really want me to attend Dartmouth and is strongly encouraging me to apply ED. However, I do like Rice just as much and would really like advice on which school would be better for me with the info below.

I am a devote Christian that is moderate to conservative on almost every issue, and while I know I will be a minority on most campuses, I still want there to be some kids that hold similar views.

A nice campus and nice dorms are pritty important to me as well. If I am going to be at a school for 4 years, I really want to enjoy where I am at. I love both suburban and rural environments...however I am not really bothered by the fact that Rice is in Houston.

I really want the school I attend to have a strong biology department and an abundance of research opportunities for my undergrad. As of now, I really would like to attend a top 5 med school...but thats really far off.

Financial aid is semi-important. My family income is around 150,000 a year, but which ever school has better financial aid would be a component in my decision regarding which school to apply ED to.

Rice has a beautiful campus with a really cool residential college system (think like the houses in Harry Potter). It’s actually in an upscale suburban part of Houston, but is about 10? minutes from downtown.

Rice is very strong in the sciences and research. No problem there. Rice is FULL of pre-meds.

Rice has a smaller tuition than most comparable universities to begin with, and I’ve heard they’re very generous with FA.

I know literally nothing about Dartmouth, but here’s 2 cents on Rice :****)

i would recommend Rice.
Rice is cheaper, located in a good city, and most important of all, 90% of pre med students get into medical school. (or was it higher???)

Dartmouth: loan-free
Rice: loans capped at $10,000

I would be extremely surprised if Rice had a better med school placement rate than Dartmouth. As just one data point, the two sent roughly the same number of students to Hopkins last year.

Well, I was initially really impressed with the fact that Rice had a 90% med school placement (the poster that said that was right…something like 104/114 got in). However, I do believe some of that can be attributed to the fact that Rice has a very large population of Texans. Because state med schools give preference to their state residents and texas has 8 med schools, Rice’s med acceptance rate might be slightly inflated.

That said, I still love Rice and Dartmouth. I am just not sure if it would be better going to an ivy or to Rice though.

I don’t know as much about Dartmouth, so I can’t really help you there.

BUT, Rice is definitely a good choice considering that it’s right next to Texas Medical Center and has a pretty good relationship with Baylor. I even heard that Rice might be acquiring Baylor as its own med school.

Go with dartmouth. You might think your parents don’t have your best interest at heart when it comes to selecting a college but they know a lot more than you think. Your dad has worked his tail off to provide your family with the income it has now and dreamed of one day seeing you arrive for orientation at the college of “his dreams”. Honestly, with Rice and Dartmouth, both are so extremely great schools that you can’t go wrong with either one can you? My opinion is listen more to why your dad wants dartmouth and consider doing ED since he is paying for your college tuition. If you truly believe you’d rather be at Rice than anywhere else in the world, even harvard, yale, princeton, etc, then do ED to Rice.

hahahaha IBClass know what you are saying and research the right stuff before you stupid. Of course thats the price what the colleges are saying on their website but Rice has already included personal expenses and stuff on the cost, while D"i"rtmouth only considered just room, board and tuition in their price. Including the personal expenses i would say it would be 51,000 +.

Also even considering only the tuition

Rice: $31,430
Dartmouth: $38,679

thats negligble difference? you think 7 grand is a joke?

Also, Rice gives generous scholarships even to the international students, while Dartmouth ( i believe) only rely on financial aid to assist the students.

Also, you said they sent similar number of students to med school do you have proof? (well i think there will be but…)

and for the opinion of nooob above i completely agree with what he is saying, but for me, choosing the college right for you and the college you would do good in is more important than your parent’s opinion. Those two are very good school and i would say just go with your instinct.

also Rtgrove123, Rice i think has 50% of texans but does that mean they were all born in texas? i dont think so, it just merely describes how many students they selected from each state, not that they are all texas citizens. Or i am not suree really…

You have to consider the environment of each university.

Dartmouth is secluded, in the middle of nowhere (yes, Hanover counts as nowhere). It has a liberal arts college feel to it, and a lot of students are very physically active.

Rice, on the other hand, is in / near a large city and does not have the liberal arts feel to it.

even with his original post, 4k.year is far from negligible. That’s 16k of difference once you graduate and go off to med school to accumulate even more debt…

Kyo- Nice try, but I stand by my statement that it’s negligible. The OP could quite possibly qualify for financial aid, in which case it’s simply a matter of comparing packages.

Let’s see…no loans at Dartmouth, $10K at Rice. Which do you think would offer better financial aid?

Oh, and don’t bother mentioning merit scholarships. No ED admit would get one.

It seems like you would like Rice considering that Rice University is a very conservative school, nice campus etc… I myself would choose Dartmouth.

oh you know what IBclass??? Rice gives $16,000 (or 17,500 i think) of scholarship per year and you think a house hold earning 150,000 a year would qualify for financial that would make up a difference from two universities?? “nice try” Rice would be definitely be cheaper. honestly i would say he has to pay about 40,000 if he goes to dartmouth if he is lucky and dartmouth has good financial aid system.

IBclass06 do your research. Rice considers all incoming freshmen for scholarships, and roughly 30% of the incoming class gets a scholarship of some kind.

Rice hands down over Dartmouth for premed (though both are really top notch choices for premed).

Rice has Texas Medical Center right across the street (whole bunch of volunteering and medicine related opportunities right there) compared to Dartmouth which is in the middle of nowhere lol.

Just for fun, Rice has a larger endowment than Dartmouth (4.6bn vs. 3.74bn) and a smaller undergraduate student body, which I think is pretty amazing…
