Rice or Dartmouth for Premed

You have not provided enough information. What do you want to study as an undergrad? Pre-med is neither a field of study nor a major at either school. If you are interested in engineering, including bioengineering, then Rice would be the better choice (assuming that you have a genuine interest, because the Rice engineering load is intense). Both are excellent in the basic sciences required for medical school admission. In the liberal arts (general known to engineers as arts and crafts) Dartmouth probably has a slight edge. For undergraduate research opportunities in the medical field, Rice has a distinct advantage. It is across the street from the largest medical complex in the world and its science and engineering programs collaborate extensively with the intitutions in the Texas Medical Center, e.g., M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine.

The living environments are distinctly different. Greek life is important at Dartmouth. It does not exist at Rice, which has a residential college system in which students are randomly assigned.

Once you decide on your most likely academic interests you and your parents really should visit both campuses.

^ what wobudong said. Another note of interest for the OP (as you said you were interested in bio), Rice just completed the BioScience Research Collaborative.

Schee- I admire your devotion to your future school, but give me a break. The purpose of scholarships is to draw students to Rice who would otherwise matriculate at better schools (which for many would include Dartmouth). It makes no sense to give an ED admit a scholarship, because (s)he is required to matriculate. To think otherwise is extraordinarily naive and foolish.

Rice gives merit scholarships to many ED applicants. They have this weird notion that merit scholarships should be awarded for merit.

Hey, go with what you know, right?

A very old example, I know. But there is another one from a couple years after that, as I recall. It’s something I was looking up when I was applying/deciding to apply early or not.

Another vote to avoid ED if you are concerned about FA. ED is for when you have that one dream school above all others, where you’ll make the FA work if there’s any way possible.

i am also going to voice concern for you going ED.

anyway, if anything, i feel like rice fits you more. it seems that everyone who is saying “…but i’d choose dartmouth myself” is because of dartmouth’s prestige.
