Rice or Georgetown??

I'm deciding bt Georgetown and Rice... I'm not really sure about my major right now but i no that i do want to be involved in the pharmaceutical industries in China later on... so first, what is a good major(s).. and second which school would be better?

Rice is generally better for sciences and Georgetown is for humanities. Considering that Rice is in Houston (NASA) and that Georgetown is in DC (Politics) that would make sense. I have a friend who goes to Rice and knows someone indirectly who goes to Georgetown... so...

Houston is good for corporations/oil, too (not politics, but similar skillsets).

So many kids change their majors. You're young. Both are great schools. Go where you feel you'll have the funnest, most exciting, most interesting experience.

I would choose Rice because im a science major. but they are both great schools. although DC has a very high cost of living.

any more ideas?

If you're into basketball... or sports in general, Georgetown is great.

I liked how Rice does not have the whole Greek system. Not really sure if Georgetown does or not. D.C. is more expensive and colder... I am pretty sure that Rice is ranked above Georgetown in the U.S. News rankings although Georgetown has lower acceptance rates. Personally I selected Rice because I liked how the college system was set up and the lack of Greek life. Also Rice is more generous with financial aid (and is cheaper overall) which was very important to me. My overall impression is that Rice gives more personal and individual attention than Georgetown.

Not really. Few here really care about our athletics.

We do not have one, either.

Definitely.

It depends on your major.

It is not that high. Keep in mind that Rice is located in one of the most affluent areas of Houston, so if the cost of living is lower, it is not by much.

fwiw,

I have a friend at georgetown who is a bio major. He's fairly happy with the school although he just abhorred his roommate.

He came to visit me though and was absolutely wowed by the food at Rice, as well as the way our buildings and campus are maintained. This is the difference between a HUGE endowment/student (rice) and an average one (georgetown).

He should have been, for the on-campus food here is awful!

Yes, there is an enormous difference in this regard. Since Georgetown has so little space, we tend to build vertically and have less open fields. There are only two real quadrangles here, and the campus is laden with concrete.

Well, Georgetown's endowment is low; this not only implies less flexibility in terms of maintaing facilities and constructing new ones, but also less flexibility for financial aid.

DC is definitly much higher than houston....u kidding me...you can get a cheap apartment around the rice area...could you get one around the DC area...also that place is supposed to have a high income tax although students dont have to worry much about it since they wont be earning much. my uncle studied in georgetown and he liked it, but he mentioned the cold and money issues.

Yes, I am signing a lease in a couple of weeks...

Today's temperature will reach 76 degrees!

yes im aware there is temperatures like that...but the ovearall or average climate is lower..and i guess it might be because im from south america...perpetual sun baby! but i mean...i dont like the cold and it is cold up there during the winter...much colder than here. cold makes me lethargic

Yes... because usually during winter... it is supposed to be... cold!

At any rate, a positive aspect about living here in D.C. is that I can experience all four seasons, rather than two in Houston (355 days of summer, and 10 days of winter).

i have the same decision to make! actually i was choosing between cornell, georgetown, and rice--but then i visited cornell and hated it.

any advice? i want to study political science/international relations (i am accepted to gtown's SFS school). i know that gtown is generally regarded to be better in this area...but i REALLY like rice.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

g-izzle ~ i didnt like cornell either bc it was really really bleak and depressing. i haven't visited rice yet so i dont have an opinion but the SFS program at Georgetown is amazing! i would choose georgetown bc it has amazing polisci and international relations

I am not sure what I can add, since I am majoring in philosophy over here. Needless to say, the SFS is incredible and affords students a plethora of opportunities.

One drawback of the SFS, however, is that the program is very structured; it will thus be difficult to take many electives since much of the curriculum is already chosen.

i know i know...sfs at gtown is supposed to be amazing for what i want to do...its just that...

well frankly i just started reading these forum things and there are a lot of negative comments about gtown. but apparently everyone loves rice! i went to vision weekend (like owl weekend but for minorities) at rice and just fell in love. then again, i live in houston and want to get away. this college business is hard isnt it? choosing the next four years of your life...kinda scary!

thanks though for the help!

I agree. Between Georgetown and Rice, I prefer Rice.

However, there are also practical concerns: can Rice match what the SFS offers? I doubt it.
