Rice or Pitt (Premed)

Hi!

I want to go to med school and I've been accepted to Rice and Pitt.

Rice:
1. Private
2. Resident college system
3. Nice weather

Pitt:
1. Public
2. Honors college

Both are in proximity of important medical centers! I can't find any stats on Pitt graduates and their success in med school. Does anybody have ideas?

I live down the street from Rice but am going to Pitt next year so I will try to help you out. Rice is a small school (around 4000 undergraduates). It is a beautiful campus within a HUGE city. Unlike Pitt, the campus is very college-like with grass and buildings and such. Rice in the next couple of years is planning to merge with Baylor Medical School which is the main medical school that supplies doctors to the Texas Medical Center. Rice is a private university so the price tag is significantly larger than Pitt’s. Because it is connected to Baylor and down the street from the medicl center, research opportunities are plentiful and a couple of undergraduate classes at Rice (like neuroscience for example) are taught at Baylor. I have a number of friends who are current students as well as a lot of friends going next year. For pre-med it is an excellent option.

Not only is Pitt not as small, I feel that it is less competitive also. At Pitt, if you ar involved in the honors college there are a ton of opportunities. Like Rice, proximity to a large medical center allows for job and research opportunities. Pitt has a lot of health science majors on campus (nursing, pharm, dentistry, medicine, etc) which allows for cooperation on projects between the schools. I am going to be in the nursing program at Pitt. Many of the schools use simulators for practice and many types are available from babies to adults and of both genders.

I feel that you probable can’t go wrong with either option. I think it comes down to what environment you would like to be in.

go to Rice, better hands down for pre-med, and in general!! beautiful campus, lots of fun. but definitely visit before you decide for sure.
