Rice or UCSD

I want to do pre-med. Mainly, I want to know about the grade inflation at UCSD vs. Rice. Is there a huge difference. UCSD is about $15k cheaper than rice and since I will be racking up debts in med school, money is a concern. I managed to make it into the bioengineering program at UCSD so I m pretty stoked about that.

Help me out guys. Do you think I should go to rice or ucsd for premed?

Rice because I love chinese food =P

I'd say...... go where your happy because expenses can be paid later, but this is coming from someone who is lucky enough to not have to pay for college. I just know that if I was poor I would still go to the school that made me happiest regardless of expense, to an extent.

If

( Rice happiness - UCSD happiness ) > (Rice $$$ - UCSD $$$)

then go to Rice

How are you gonna be happy if you are under financial pressure though?
For your situation I'd say UCSD

alright so far, everything is going for ucsd, except the presitge part. For me it really comes down to, is rice's presitge really worth that extra $15k

Well, statistically Rice undergrads get into great grad schools, but those that don't go to grad get amazing jobs right away. Dunno about UCSD

UCSD is very prestigious and up there with UCLA and UCB. Go for it!

thats what I'd like to think, esp their bioengineering program, but is it really so? Prestige is all about perception. Do people really think ucsd is as prestigious as rice, ucla and ucb?

I like Rice, IMO.

Oh man fo sho... You can bet on that...
Otherwise, who cares about prestige? The thing that matters is the STRENGTH OF SPECIFIC PROGRAM
If you are majoring in bioengineering, the UCSD/Rice seemed to be a nobrainer.

RICE! Duh!

R-i-c-e Alllllllll The Way!!!!!!!!!

Rice... its the place where u GRAIn some knowledge

please do not rejectme for that lame pun

I'd go to UCSD BME because it's one of the most incredible programs any college has. You may well decide not to be a doctor and go into biotech after you see the opportunities. My sister did an internship there and is now headed for fame and fortune in biotech.

If you have the money go to rice, it frees up UCSD for all us poor people.

One other thing to consider is that San Diego is a hotbed for biotech that could offer you work experience both during college and after graduation.

When it comes to medical school I'd rather go to UCSD.

Rice would be the way to go in my opinion, because you get more personal attention, and a smaller school.

UCSD, prestige wise, is not as well respected as Rice. In California maybe, but it would depend if you want to stay in Cali or not. Outside California Rice would be better known.

Rice is way more prestigious than UCSD. I think I read that most Rice students are placed in their first choice med schools. Personally I would go with Rice becaue you will get more personal attention and will be better prepared for med school. At UCSD you are just a number... UCSD is an amazing school though and I can completely understand not wanting debt.

"Rice is way more prestigious than UCSD."

-i dont know about this. its close, and in bio it is no contest. ucsd places kids into top med schools just as effectively, if not more so, than rice. plus the prestige difference between ucsd and rice is very minimal, deff not worth the difference in price. plus ucsd has one of the best bio/premed programs in the country. rice is an excellent school though. so i would check both schools out before deciding, and attend the school you like best. i believe for you though, ucsd is the clear choice with in state tuition and for one of the best bio/premed programs in the country. plus your in san diego. if you werent a california resident, or if your area of emphasis was something other than bio related, then it would be a more difficult decision. but if you wanna practice medicine in california, ucsd> rice. in the midwest it would be a different story.

Rice would be a better bet outside of the West. UCSD is a better bet on the West Coast. It depends, again, on what you want.

BTW, a larger percentage of Rice graduates go on to grad school than do graduates from UCSD.
