Rice or UT Honors for Engineering

Is anyone else comparing these two schools? I understand that UT Honors Engineering is a pretty well respected program for engineering, and Rice is a bit lower but still good.

For me, financially we would pay $48,000 for 4 years at UT. Rice would be $150,000. If I goto Rice, I have to sell my car to offset costs. At UT, I get to keep my car and my father will give me $45,000 cash to spend as I please.

Is the Rice engineering program worth this difference? I feel about the same about the campus and surrounding cities.

At first I was going to say Rice hands down, but a car and $45,000 is cause for some serious reconsideration.

It depends on what you buy with the 45,000...if you buy ice cream, you would have been better off going to Rice. But if you use it to further your education, or for a down payment on a house, then I'd say go to UT, if you think you'd be happy there.

i certainly would not waste the money. Actually, it is invested so it would gain around $2,500+ per year. So it would be around $55,000 at the end of 4 years.

I think this is a simple decision: pick UT. Its engineering (and especially engineering honors) program is great and very prestigious, not to mention the immense amount of money you guys would save.

Rice is def. superior... but not worth 100k extra

thanks for the input.. i have chosen to go for UT honors. The first year will be just $6k including personal expenses, so if i don't like it, i will consider transfer to Cornell, Berkeley, or Rice. In that case, I would at least save $30,000.

glad to see you'll be at UT :)

i would choose rice but the money is an issue for sure so UT
