Rice Parent Thread

Thanks, @Houston1021 . Admissions confirmed your comment: merit awards were posted with acceptance.

For those of us getting ready to pay next semester’s tuition bills, it is good to know Rice makes a strong showing as a top 10 best value college. https://www.kiplinger.com/slideshow/college/T014-S003-best-college-values-2018/index.html http://news.rice.edu/2017/12/22/kiplinger-ranks-rice-as-a-top-10-best-value-university/

For those that have not seen it, Happy Holidays from Rice University. http://news.rice.edu/2017/12/18/happy-holidays-from-rice-university/

Advice for few things, daughter is interested in majoring in computer science, she is a pretty good student. But we are Indian and looking for a need based/merit based aid. My questions are as follows:

  1. How is the computer science placement at Rice?
  2. Does Rice stack merit aid on top of need based aid for top female students with great achievements in math and science?

@ultapradesh
Hi - I would ask this question in the general Rice forum, not under the parent thread. More people will see it and you will (hopefully) get answers to your questions.

Does anyone have experience with the OWL laundry service? Is this something most students take advantage of or just do their own laundry? My D does her own laundry now, but a grandparent is offering to purchase this service if we think it would be beneficial.

Most students do their own laundry. The machines are convenient and free. My D was there 4 years (2017 grad) and denies knowing anybody who used the laundry service. IMHO this is a “separate well-meaning parents and relatives from their money” initiative.

As @aquapt says the laundry facilities at Rice are free. My daughter has never had any problems getting a machine. She says the weekends are busier than during the week. If the grandparents want to do something nice, have them give the student a gift certificate for the student run Rice Coffee House on campus http://coffeehouse.rice.edu or a nearby restaurant in Rice Village such as Torchy’s or Hungry’s.

Thank you @aquapt and @Houston1021! This was what I had hoped would be the case. Great ideas on the gift certificates, my D will be thrilled to hear there is a Torchy’s nearby.

It is within walking distance of the campus. My D goes there a lot. https://torchystacos.com/location/rice-village/

Here is the design for a new high school opening near The Woodlands north of Houston. The design is very like that of Lovett Hall at Rice. http://gohs.conroeisd.net

Rice has posted, “Rice Univ. respects the right of free expression and encourages responsible citizenship among our current students and high school applicants. Disciplinary sanctions for participating in peaceful protests by students will not negatively impact their admission to the university.”

FYI. http://news.rice.edu/2018/03/14/rice-receives-record-20898-applications/

I wonder what the acceptance rate will be this year? My guess is that Rice will be more conservative in their number of acceptances given the higher than expected yield (and resulting over enrollment) last year.

Price of attending Rice is going up. http://www.ricethresher.org/article/2018/03/tuition-increases-2018

@Faulkner1897 just attended Owl Days 2018 with her daughter who will be a member of the class of 2022. She sent this link to the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1OQQb671xA&feature=youtu.be

Rice has posted the Common Data Set for the 2017-2018 year. https://oir.rice.edu/additional-resources/common-data-set

Very interesting that Rice took 17 students off the waitlist in 2017 even though Rice was overenrolled!

I wondered about that too–especially since only 1 came off the wait list the year before. Apparently the financial incentives to overcrowd freed up 17 beds according to this article in The Thresher. The may be the explanation. http://www.ricethresher.org/article/2017/08/high-yield-causes-bed-shortages
