@Riversider such as?
Iâm not trying to offend anyone. I genuinely find it surprising as average common person doesnât know about it and usually associates colleges with brand recognition and east coast location with elitism. Iâm not questioning Riceâs worth. It is a great college, just doesnât have as much brand name power. It is actually admirable that they compete solely on basis of genuine merit.
Rice is small, and its amazing the number of people in the general population who are unfamiliar with many well respected schools.
True that. Smaller elite colleges like Rice, Williams, Pomona, Amherst, even Caltech have little street recognition and they donât seem to care for that.
It is amazing the number of people who know only the big flagship schools. Those in the know and in the right places are familiar with the top schools.
many across the US (especially those with advanced education) in STEM are familiar with Rice and Caltech.
Just went to Rice patents day thought I would do it once in my life before my kids are out of school. Didnât see our daughter a whole lot because she was to busy studying all weekend. This seemed to be a common theme to all the parents there. So just saying of you plan to attend rice the ethos is studies first.
My sonâs prom date went to Harvard and the first year she was constantly posting snap chat photos of all the wild partying.
By the way my daughter couldnât be happier at rice.
To the earlier post most name recognition for colleges is related to their sports programs. It is one reason colleges spend so much on sports . But big time sports schools like the huge state universities constantly get their names mentioned in newspapers, radio, and TV. Success in sports has nothing, or at least little, to do with academic accomplishment.
DS#1 is going to his Rice reunion in a few weeks!
Welcome to all the parents whose children were accepted ED into the class of 2023.
Thanks @Houston1021 ⊠my daughter is very excited!
As a heads up, last year I tried to join the official Rice parents page on FB around this time, and I did not get approval until the summer. There seems to be a policy of not accepting new parents until after RD is over and all of the dust has settled. They also cross check the members of the group with the official student list.
The Rice parents Facebook group is very informative. Rice directs the Rice parents facebook group to wait until all of the students have enrolled in Rice for the year to invite new parents to join. This happens sometime the late spring or early summer. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to post them here, and the Rice parents in this group on CC will try to provide answers.
Thanks for the welcome! I have a question-
D was accepted ED and is looking forward to an acceptance in the mail. How quickly do they send those out?
Thanks a bunch
Admissions probably mailed them on Friday. The acceptance materials are in a folder in a large mailing envelope.
Sounds good, @Houston1021 , thanks. Iâm guessing no swag?
Not much. There was a small Rice pennant in my daughterâs packet two years ago. This is a picture of the packet from last year.https://www.chron.com/news/article/Rice-accepted-just-11-percent-of-applicants-this-12777700.php
The Rice bookstore has Rice stuff you can order.
My daughterâs friend was just accepted ED to Wash U - she showed us her acceptance packet yesterday - full of stickers! And they asked for her t-shirt size and told her to keep an eye out for other fun stuff arriving by mail! Her acceptance letter was even personalized with something related to her application specifically.
Rice is very different from many of its peer schools. Admissions at Rice is very low key, not a show off kind of place. The packet doesnât have a huge message on the outside like Gone to Texas or Youâre In etc. Inside the packet is a blue folder with the Rice seal stuffed with info. The welcome to campus for O Week is over the top and enthusiastic. The students will get lots of T-shirts and Rice swag during Orientation (âO Weekâ) and Owl Days if they attend.
Hi. Our Daughter is beyond thrilled to be attending Rice, class of 2023 (as are we!). Does Rice have an âaccepted studentâs dayâ like other universities? Weâre familiar with O week, but wondering if there is such a program? Thanks.
Congratulations to your daughter! Rice has two programs for accepted students. Owl Days is a multi day program where the students stay on campus overnight and get fully immersed into Rice life. There are programs for parents but the parents have to stay at hotels off campus. Rice also offers accepted student day single day programs for those that cannot fit Owl Days into their schedule. Accepted student days offer the student a chance to attend classes and also offer programs for parents. We went to the accepted student day with our daughter and had lunch on campus. Here is an Owl Days video and schedule from past years. My daughter sent in her deposit to Rice as soon as she got home from the accepted student day. https://riceadmission.rice.edu/documents/odad/od_schedule_tentative.pdf
Other parents whose owls attended one of the programs will probably chime in. http://news.rice.edu/2017/04/17/admitted-students-experience-rice-university-at-owl-days-2017/
