Welcome @jinl11 !!! I am excited for when they open the FB page to new parents.
My son was accepted ED. A couple of questions. Any reason to attend the admitted student event ? We are local so travel is not a concern. He will know a few people from his high school who are currently attending or will attend Rice next year, but would like to be able to meet others who are also local - suggestions?
Congratulations on your sonâs acceptance to Rice. My daughter is from Houston also. 4 others from her high school class started Rice at the same time she did, but most of them were spread out over different residential colleges. They see each other occasionally on campus or in class. Your son can request to be placed in the same residential college with one other person if he has a good friend attending Rice. My daughter and one of her male friends from high school are both in Martel.
If he can attend Owl Days, he will get a real feel for the Rice experience and meet many other incoming Rice students from Houston and around the country. I will ask @Faulkner1897 to address this as her daughter was admitted ED last year and attended Owl Days. My daughter didnât attend Owl Days because she had a conflict, but in retrospect she wishes she had. She went to one of the Admitted Student Days instead. She says students that met up at Owl Days knew many people at the start of O Week. However, if your son canât attend any of the admitted student events, it is fine to dive into things at O Week in August.
Rice alumni around the country will host incoming student receptions in late July or early August. There are usually a couple of receptions in different areas of Houston. There is a closed group Facebook page for admitted students that your son can join. Have him look for Rice University Class of 2023 and send a request to be admitted to the administrator.
Thanks @Houston1021. I will encourage him to sign up for the FB group and coordinate with his accepted classmates.
Make sure itâs not the other âadmitted studentsâ groupâitâs allegedly run by Russian bots, and the only post is from before ED applications were due. Itâs somebody saying that theyâre looking forward to joining a sorority and majoring in businessâŠ
The one with over 400 members administered by Dani Knoblach and Andrea Lara Lin is legitimate. Dani went to my daughterâs high school.
Thatâs the real one!
Hi - yes, my daughter attended Owl Days as an ED admit last year, and she had a wonderful time. Personally, I donât think that the point of Owl Days is to connect with students who are from the local area. Rather, the point is for the prospective students to get a sense of Rice, its student body, its academic offerings, the residential colleges, and the potential members of the class who are from all over the country and all over the world. However, as @Houston1021 noted, there are accepted student events in April that will provide a nice way for your student to meet accepted students from their city.
Thanks - my daughter was unaware of the FB page so she just asked to join!
Welcome to all the parents whose children were accepted RD into the Rice Class of 2023. Those of us that are Rice parents and/or alums will try to answer any questions etc. There is a great Facebook group for Rice parents, but the school does not open up admission into the group until the student enrolls. You will receive an invite to the Facebook parent group in late summer.
Hi - our Daughter has three options that we are trying to decide. UT Business Honors, Rice Econ and Georgetown Business. We are from Houston and Rice has been her dream all along. UT BHP made a very strong pitch yesterday that is hard to ignore. She has a interest in pol science and govt which has kept Georgetown in the running.
Will appreciate any insights from parents who have or are facing a decision?
@BinBon Is there a difference in cost or preference for college size? Is this a terminal degree or a step towards grad school?
College size is a factor but UT BHP was sold as small community within large school. She has seniors and friends she will be going with to UT or Rice, so she is comfortable with both. Georgetown is outlier. Her interests have been fluctuating but primarily in govt, social science, Econ areas. Would prefer she works for some time and then decides. We are Ok with cost of either.
Unless her mind is set on business there is no point in limiting herself to business undergrad. To further her career, sheâll need an MBA from a top school eventually. She can do that after an undergrad major or double major of her choice as well. If cost isnât a big issue then go with the college she loves most. BHP is great but UT is still a crowded public school, unless you are getting UT for free, pick between Rice and Georgetown.
If you are in Texas then Rice undergrad and then going to Georgetown or another peer school for masters would be ideal.
But if her mind is set on business, then UT BHP and a Jones School MBA would be much better than Rice econ followed by an MBA somewhere else. There isnât much overlap between Rice econ and what an actual business major would provide.
@BinBon Congratulations on your daughterâs acceptance to Rice! As you probably know, Rice does not offer a major in business but only a business minor. She could combine an Econ major with a business minor or a political science major with a business minor, or double major in Econ and Political Science. If she wants a pure business focused college experience, UT business honors program might be more of a fit and might be a lot cheaper. It is very easy to switch between majors at Rice, and not so easy to do so at UT. At Rice students do not have to declare a major until the end of sophomore year. Many students change their minds once they start taking college courses. She should attend admitted student events at all the places she is considering and then decide. https://business.rice.edu/academic-program/undergraduate-business-minor
Congratulations to all new Rice families! We are leaving this year with my youngestâs graduation. He had the most wonderful 4 years of his life with Rice from the instant he set foot on campus for the tour to this past year when he was one of the Owl Week coordinators welcoming this past yearâs freshmen here. All of our immediate family showing up for graduation next month.
@BinBon UT BHP is a small community with access to incredible opportunities and financial support. This yearâs admit rate is reportedly 3%. If you want to study business as an undergrad, itâs ideal and likely you would not need an MBA. Honors classes are small and she could live in the honors quad. For business, IMHO, this is your best choice.
Iâm not a parent but I have heard that Rice has an amazing Economics program- I have a friend who is majoring in it in the class of 2020. Itâs rigorous, but it will prepare your child for anything they may do after they graduate. I plan to be double majoring in econ and poly sci for CO2023!
Rice ranks #42 in the nation for econ whereas UT ranks #19 in the nation for business. Of course Riceâs overall university ranking is well above UT but thereâs a very solid case for going UT BHP if you know in advance that business is what you want to do.
