Hey, so from what I've read Rice prefers that students send in Subject Test scores relating to what they want to major in. My question is if that is a preference or requirement?

I’m certain that the info can be found on the Rice website. It is definitely “advisable” if not required… anything over a 700 is likely to be viewed positively.

If I’m not mistaken, I think the expectation is that your subject tests should align with your possible major to at least some degree. (Pun intended.) E.g., if you’re looking at, say, a major in Computational & Applied Mathematics, it might look a little odd to admissions officers if you didn’t take the Math Level 2 subject test. It’s not a “requirement” in the sense that if your subject tests don’t perfectly match your interests, you automatically won’t get in, but you want to present yourself in the best way possible, and having subject tests that show your strengths in your proposed area of study will definitely help you.

And as crazymomster said, you want to shoot for scores over 700. If you look over at the test prep forum here on CC, there should be at least a few threads on recommended study books for all the various subject tests. Best of luck!

I want to add that it doesn’t have to be a subject test. You can align with your major through your AP exams as well.

It’s certainly not a requirement! That being said it would help you for sure, as Rice says that they reccomend it. So if you have the time to take it, definitely take something related in your prospective major.

I’m planning to major in Bio Engineering and I took my math II, but I had sent it too late so they didn’t take it, but I was accepted!
