Rice Social Scene

My d has applied to Rice (RD) and several other schools. The residential college system really appealed to her after visiting other campuses with prevalent Greek systems. She doesn't want the big party scene. Are there many Rice students that she would be able to identify with who don't party hard? What would the social scene be for someone who doesn't drink?

My D absolutely did not want the Greek social life. She loves the residential college system - it's like a ready made family.

As for the party scene at Rice? There are partiers, kids who study ALL the time, and everything in between. Your daughter shouldn't have any problem finding like-minded friends here.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM me.

Ditto above. :)

Rice is not a party school even though some people seem to think it is. Obviously there are parties (it's college, duh), but the only big parties are the public parties that each college throws, Esperanza, Archi parties, etc. Students are in no way pressured to party.

I don't drink!

Life here is still awesome.

The colleges do a pretty good job with roommates, at least in my case. My 3 suitemates and myself all don't drink so it's good for me. As long as you don't have a problem with other people drinking its not really a problem. We still go to parties sometimes, we just don't drink. I have friends that do and friends that don't, but there are plenty of both. You can PM me with anyone other questions, I'd be glad to help.

Yeah, I drink and I've seen people at parties who I know don't drink that are havin just as good a time as I am. It's a rarity to have a party on a week night, but on Thursdays there's usually people that are at pub, or playing BP in the colleges, etc. Fridays and Saturdays there's usually at least one (sometimes more) parties that everyone (that is, everyone who parties) will go to, and they can get pretty wild. But I've had good times just chillin with friends. But Rice isn't a party school, like your typical state school where people party a couple nights or every night during the week-at Rice, or a school of similar caliber for that matter, I've found you just can't afford to do that and keep up with your work, studying, etc.
