I noticed that these threads tend to go well, so I thought I'd start one for spring 2010 Rice transfers. Anyone here applying to Rice? What attracted you to Rice? We could also discuss stats and so forth.

I was first attracted to Rice because of its outstanding math program. As I researched Rice more, I continued to find more and more qualities that really appealed to me. I love the residential house system, and I also very much like the idea of the honor code (Rice University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Perhaps this is because if I'm accepted to Rice I'll be taking advanced math courses. I've only had one teacher so far give a take home exam in a math class at my current school, and I found the whole experience much more pleasant than most math exams are. It takes off a lot of stress, but it also lets the instructor make the exam coverage more thorough. The take home focused more on in-depth understanding than memorization of techniques or algorithms.

As for the math program, I'm interested in geometry, topology, and algebra, and Rice has extremely strong coverage of this, including three courses in algebra, three courses in topology, and two courses in differential geometry.

I’m also thinking about it. I’ve always loved Rice, and it was my first choice school from the beginning but I was waitlisted. I should have tried transferring Fall '09 but I got too lazy. I’m an Electrical Engineering/Pre-med Major

I’m in the same boat. First choice out of high school but waitlisted. I’m definitely going to apply for the spring though. Should be interesting. Econ major.

I am applying to transfer to Rice in the spring of 2010 as well! I’m interested in the Earth Science department there, though if I’m admitted, I might be taking some math classes as well, since I would be coming out of Environmental Studies/Math at NYU. I was also pleasantly surprised to read about the honor code. From the application and the website, it seems like any other honor code you have to sign and mail when you apply, but I like how much they entrust their students with their own educations.

Has anybody visited the campus? I am going to be visiting next weekend!

I’d love to visit the campus, but it’s just too far away and I’m soo busy this semester.

Yes, I’m really impressed with how Rice trusts and believes in its students enough to implement the Honors Code. I know CalTech has a similar system, but I can’t think off the top of my head of any other schools that do this (although I’m sure there are some).

How are your applications coming? I’ve got all the supporting materials mailed including the recommendations. I’ve just got to put finishing touches on my essays, submit the final application, and I’ll be done!

hey there guys,
I am also applying for the Rice Spring 2010 term. I just sent off my application.
I’m a tad worried about my application in terms of its completion.
Has anyone else finished their app? if so, have you received an email from rice pertaining to your application status (in regards to it being received/complete)?

I believe I’ve submitted everything, but I’m a tad paranoid. : /

I just finalized everything yesterday as well. I got confirmation emails from commonapp.org, but I haven’t received anything from Rice yet either. I’m also a bit paranoid because I don’t know yet whether they’ve received all my stuff in the mail even though I mailed it off quite a while ago.

Does anybody know if I’m wrong in assuming that I’m supposed to be getting an email from Rice showing me how to check my application status? I’ve still received nothing but the confirmation emails from commonapp.org, and the application is due 15 October.

So I’m sure everyone here has long since submitted their applications, who else is feeling the nerve-wracking wait period as I am? >_<
sigh

Wow! I haven’t been on here in a long while! CC stresses me out… hahaha…

abcgirl, I am waiting anxiously, too! They say they notify December 15th, which is kind of a long ways away… I wonder if that’s the longest they’ll take, or if it’s the day they actually send out the letters…

Does anyone know if they only send out letters or if they do online notifications too? It’s kind of inconvenient that you won’t know until then… I have to know what I’m doing next semester so I can buy plane tickets and move all my stuff!

I think they will probably send out an online notice before an official paper notice comes in the mail as most other schools do when you apply for college.

How many of you know anybody at Rice? I don’t know anybody, and it’s pretty far from where I’m currently at. The reality of moving so far away to a place where I don’t know anybody is a little bit scary! (The college I’m at right now is nearby where I grew up, and many of my friends from high school came here.)

yay! i got the email too! actually, i got two emails–both with different titles, but with basically the same letter… the second one just had specific dates by which we had to notify them. in the first email, it said they were including the ID and login instructions were emailed separately, but i don’t have them yet…

hooray! so is anybody going next semester?!

Yeah, I got those two different emails too.

I got an email on october 22 called “Rice Admission Status Web Site,” and it had a Rice University ID and a link to the esther.rice.edu website. Besides that, that email just describe what the website was for and that I could use it to check my application status. It stills says “Application Under Review” for me, though.

So, it looks like the admission packet is probably going to arrive at my dorm next week sometime, which is Thanksgiving break, so I won’t be here. Funny timing.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be going next semester. I’d really love to. It’s just a long ways away. I’ve got to convince myself it’s worth moving so far away and going someplace without any friends first.

I hope there are some other people here who got accepted too! Anybody know details about Transfer Orientation?
