Question: The quality of Rices academic life and the Residential College System are heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice?

In other words, think about what makes you unique (interests and personality) and how you can demonstrate that at Rice, which is known for “quirky” students. For example, I talked about combination of idealism and pragmatism. My involvement in the school’s recycling program demonstrated this.

You can’t outguess or study for this type of essay. There are no answers. Among thousands of applications and essays, admissions readers are looking for ones that are interesting to read.

Be yourself. Be confident. Everyone has unique qualities. What do you enjoy doing? How have others helped you? What is special about your high school?

Sit and write an essay draft in an hour. Your first thoughts are your ‘voice’.

You are unique, and just by bopping around campus you are contributing to the Rice mix of individuals. That’s what Rice wants. Just tell them who you are! :)

this prompt is a weird way of saying “tell us something about yourself” aka you can write on anything… at least that’s how I interpreted it. I didn’t even tailor my essay to the prompt and I got in- so I think as long as you are giving them a picture of who “you” are they don’t care how formatted your essay is towards the prompt.

SuperHahas hit it right on-- this is basically an essay to tell something more about yourself to the admissions committee. Don’t stress out about it, and most importantly, don’t procrastinate on the Rice application just because it is a difficult prompt. I actually had fun with this essay, as crazy as it sounds.

@selter01: It says 2-3 dbl spaced pages, so you can guesstimate from there.

I’m still mulling over this essay prompt, especially since I fit into the Chinese stereotype extremely nicely. It’s really hard to figure out what about me is different from others.

Hmm… lightbulb moment perhaps I’ll just talk about how I always seem to fit the Chinese stereotype without meaning to! =)
