~rice transfer!!~

hello!
i'm an international student (canadian) presently in UT Austin majoring in civil engineering. what would be my chances of admission to Rice with these stats?

ACT: math/science/reading/english 33/28/27/20
SAT 2: 760 math 2c, 710 math 1c
3.68 gpa from very competitive school, most rigorous schedule
expect a 3.5 first semester here in UT
amazing work experience in summer of 2003 and 2004 (working at a multi multi million dollar project)
decent recs from professors (classes are HUGE so none really know me well)
not too envolved in UT though, just a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, play tennis (not on the UT team though)

so considering UT is 3rd in the nation for civil engineering, what would be my chances of admission in Rice? Thanks a lot! :)

bumpin it up...

WHACK
please anyone feel free to respond

You would need a really compelling reason to transfer. Since you are at a top civil engineering school, this task will be daunting.

thanks nspeds.
other than a compelling reason to transfer, are my stats high enough you think? plus if you look at it the other way, wouldn't they want to take someone who is majoring in a better ranked school in thier major, or even for engineering in general, than Rice? i don't know. oh, and does being in the same state improve my chances?

1) I hear it is harder for in-state applicants to get into Rice than out of state, though I am unaware of this applies to transfers.

2) Traditionally, it is harder for one to transfer from Ivy to Ivy than for one to transfer from Community College to an Ivy. If we apply this reasoning to Rice, which is pretty much an "Ivy-like" school, it is easy to see that a person coming from a lower ranked college would have a more compelling reason to apply (ie. due to inadequate resources).

3) Your SAT II scores are excellent, though you have not provided the third subject that you took. Moreover, Rice does not care so much about the SAT II as they do not ask for it in the application.

4) I do not know if yout ACT score is good since I have no frame of reference in regards of measuring such a score.

5) Your GPA is good.

Please note that I am also applying for transfer to Rice. While I am generally a nice person and wish to provide help to anyone, it is also somewhat of a conflict of interest for me to be helping you in this regard so I am in somewhat of a difficult situation. Regardless, whether you should take this advice seriously is a moot point since I am essentially posting the same arguments that have been repeatedly constructed in this forum within the context of transfer admissions to Ivy League Schools.

1) hmm, that sounds a bit wierd but it could defenitely be true

2) yes... that makes sense

3) i actually only took 2 satII's math 1c and 2c (i was not even required to send my satII scores when i applied to UT Austin) i took both in 10th grade so i might be thinking of tacking them again, maybe i'll get higher? i'm also thinking of taking the chemistry satII

4) as for my ACT score, pretty much the only thing that is truly worth talking about it the 33 in math. as i remember it was in the high 90's percentile, i'm pretty sure. each "subscore" (ie. math, science, etc...) is out of 36. oh and i think my composite score (total averaged out subscores) is equal to a 1200-1220 in the SAT. but that's because i got sooo low on the reading section. i actually made a mistake on my first post, i got a 27 in english, and 20 in reading.

5) yeah, i'm hoping to actually get higher in UT but i guess the "worst" i can get is around a 3.5.... let's see how finals go this week! ahhhhh

haha i understand your situation and i thank you very much for replying in the first place. if you don't mind me asking, which university are you in now and what are your stats? just need to see how i match up...

If you do a search for Rice in the context of the Transfers Forum, you should find my post. My chances are not too encouraging either. Your ACT score may be your biggest weakness.

As far as I know, the cutoff GPA for Rice is 3.2, so you are doing quite well. The median SAT score is between 1330 - 14XX, so you might be in trouble with your ACT score, though I do not have a list of the median composites accepted by Rice University.

I would not recommend retaking the SAT IIs as they are not really requested by Rice in the first place. Moreover, if you do take the SAT IIs, you should take three subjects and one of them must be Writing (this is taken from the regular application, not transfers).

From my perspective, Rice merely does a cutoff in terms of GPA and SAT so as long as you meet the requirements, your foot is in the door. However, whether you make it in the door is related to your reasons and recs and everything else!

Good luck! If you any more information, I will do my best to provide it.

yeah... i kinda had a feeling the ACT composite score will be a negative, but i was hoping they'd look further than that and look at my subscores. since i am i engineering, my math/sciece subscores are not bad. but yeah, i can also see how they would want applicants to any field to be proficient in english. oh well, we'll see what happens. thanks for everything and good luck to you too!
