I've read that depending on the academic school you select in the Rice supplement, your application will be looked at through different criteria. My problem is that I'm really entirely an undecided applicant, leaning a little towards math and bio.

I was going to just apply to natural sciences, but all of my ECs are in art, music, and service, none in any of those fields. Should I just apply to sciences, even though I might have a lower chance of getting in since they'll see I don't have any science ECs? Or should I apply to humanities or something, even though I can't really see myself majoring there?

Please help >< Rice is my top choice.. I've written several versions of the "why this academic school" supplement and I've been stressing about this for the past couple of days...

You are not locked into your choice. A huge percentage of students who graduate, do so in a different major/field than they went in with. So if you can say “why natural sciences” then that is the way to go. It is honest. Why have you changed your interests from art/music/service to natural sciences… if you are sincere, then your essay is as strong as though you had years of “applicable” ECs. Having different experiences/perspectives is a good thing… let them see that.

You can mention that you have many interests and that at this time you hope to pursue natural sciences and why, but that you remain open to all that Rice has to offer.

If you know what major you are interested in, you should apply there. Undecided does not work for Rice although changing your major is just fine.

Music is one you don’t want to choose unless you are sure since you have to get through the audition process.
