Anyone applying/applied to Rice ED this year? Is there a thread already on this? I’m not able to find it. All the best!
@Tantrumstar. My son is applying ED. Application has been sent. waiting for couple things to come from his high school to complete the application. And he’s requested an interview.
Awesome. My son is applying to Rice ED as well. Good luck to your son.
Thank you and good luck
Bumping this up. Please put comments about ED for the Class of 2025 in this thread.
My son applied ED to Rice on Friday! He’s applying TO b/c of the crazy testing season. His stats otherwise are excellent. He knows Rice is a big reach for everyone, but he’s excited. He has a student interview coming up pretty soon.
Good luck everyone!
My son applied ED to Rice on Wednesday! Requested an alumni interview. Fingers crossed for all of our kids!
I just checked my son’s portal and all green checks. Should be notified regarding interview soon. Now for me I’ve got to complete the dreaded CSS.
How do I access the portal, I already applied yesterday…
@calc4ever, From the admission page scroll all the way down and you should see applicant portal. I can’t remember if they sent my son an email but pretty sure they did with instructions. It may take some time to process through. Good luck
@Ladadof3 Thank you so much!! I will see if I can find it.
My son applied ED to Rice. Test optional, 97.15 weighted GPA with 8 AP/6 DC courses including AP CALC 1 and 2, AP Physics 1&2 etc. In state applicant, over 700 total volunteer hours (he volunteered a lot over the summers). Applied for engineering. He received his alumni interview notification 2 days ago which gives the name and contact email for the alumni member. Not sure how the pandemic will affect OOS and overseas applications. Already accepted to Texas A&M, TTU, Baylor (with a healthy scholarship). We are hopeful as Rice is his first choice!
@gatorleg. My son also got email regarding interview times. We are oos in Louisiana.
He has also been accepted into Texas A&M. He thought about TTU but didn’t apply. Baylor is a great school however wasn’t sure about engineering dept. He also applied to UT Dallas and they are generous with scholarships.
Good Luck
Is CSS worth applying to if you are not a low-income family?
@calc4ever – Rice has generous financial aid. You should run the price estimator or Net Price Calculator on its website to see if you might qualify for aid. That is easier than doing the FAFSA and CSS to find out. If these tools indicate you would qualify for aid, you should def. complete the forms.
Good luck!
Depends what you mean by “not being a low-income family”. If you mean your household income is around the US average of $60-65K, then you definitely want to fill out FAFSA/CSS because you’ll very likely receive significant financial aid from Rice. But if it is above $200K then your odds of receiving need-based aid are quite low unless you are able to document that you have little in the way of savings.
Saw that the middle 50% SAT for the engineering school is 1490-1560 and ACT is 34-36. Really incredible especially while having very strong diversity. That’s why the list of employers is so impressive. BCG and Apple were a couple of the Top 10 employers and a majority made over $100K per year starting out.
Hey y’all! Current Rice student here just wanting to let you know that President Leebron sent an email today with the following excerpt:
"We were pleased this fall that we had a significant increase in early decision and Questbridge applications and that the most significant increases among U.S. applicants were among underrepresented minority students (Black, Mexican-American and other Hispanic). A number of doctoral programs have had notable success recruiting underrepresented minority scholars. Over the past five years, Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Sociology, Mechanical Engineering, Political Science and Anthropology have recruited doctoral students of which at least a third of the domestic cohort is from an underrepresented group. But, again, there is still substantial work to be done. "
It’s probably going to be harder to get in this year than last year, but best of luck to all of you.
Hi tristatecoog,
Can you provide a link to the engineering school middle 50% SAT/ACT scores? Are there scores for other schools within Rice as well?
Thanks.
Kentfield, unfortunately, that’s all I’ve got. My wife is Rice PhD Statistics grad.
Top 10 employers were AIG, Airbnb, GE, Facebook, Google, BCG, Capital One, Microsoft, Chevron and Accenture.
61% of the grads had starting salaries of $81K or more.
27% of incoming freshmen were Hispanic or African-American. 26% Asian and 33% Caucasian.
Top 10 grad schools were Columbia, Duke, MIT, Rice, Stanford, UT-Austin, UCSD, GaTech, Penn and Berkeley. Not too shabby.
