Accepted. Thought I didn’t have much of a chance since I applied a few days after the deadline. Got an email which prompted me to check. Housing situation is pretty wack as detailed in the letter:
Rice University has limited on-campus housing availability for the fall 2022 semester. However, we firmly believe that your talent belongs at Rice. As a result, you may choose to accept our offer of admission in one of two ways:
1. You may enroll for the fall 2022 semester without a guarantee of on-campus housing. In this case, you would be responsible for securing your own housing off-campus for fall 2022. Guaranteed housing will be available for spring 2023; you may choose to move on campus for that semester. 2. You may accept our offer of admission but choose to matriculate in the spring 2023 semester, and you will be guaranteed on-campus housing.
Funny thing is that on my transfer credit evaluation is says the admit date was 02-May-2022. So pretty interesting that they decided to string us along despite having made decisions weeks ago.
I likely won’t be attending as I’m more than happy with heading to Duke, but the financial aid is significantly more than I’ve gotten anywhere else outside of UCLA.
Many congrats! I didn’t realize that you could submit the app after the deadline. Had I known, I would have taken the time to write a much better “Why Rice” essay.
But it still doesn’t make sense how they took that long to make the decision public. Is it to avoid creating a false perception about overall admissions odds? Feels like any benefit of waiting is insignificant compared to the fact that plenty of other schools required deposits weeks ago.
Huh? They’ve already spent at least a year at their current school, and clearly it didn’t work out as expected, so I think your question is a total non sequitur.
Also they could have never wanted to go to this school but it was the only one they got into.
Either way, it’s perfectly reasonable to want to go somewhere else, and in my opinion it totally trivializes their experience by saying “just find a way to have allegiance to the place”.
