I believe that the colleges ask the counselors to rank the students per decile: top 1%, to[p 5 %, etc. That is whether the shcool officially ranks its students or not.
@stressed4lyfe Holistic imo
@stressed4lyfe: Here is the common data set for Rice. If you look at Page 6, it will give you an idea what the admissions committee places the most emphasis on:
http://www.oir.rice.edu/uploadedFiles/Office_of_Institutional_Research/Content/Common_Data_Set/CDS_2013-14_draft%207_web%20version.pdf
Holistic if you are in the top 10% of your HS class. If not, then you have little to no chance, even if you have a 36 ACT and stellar GPA and activities.
Any idea when the decisions are out?
^ it’s been addressed many times in the thread, go back one page to check.
About ranking again- do you think there is special consideration for v/ small schools (where the top 10% would only be about 4-5 people)? Or is it viewed the same across the board?
The Decision date is April 1.

Oh wait I’m stupid never mind. it says by April one, so I guess the best prediction we have so far is tomorrow.
Class rank is an academic factor that is included in USNews rankings. Regardless of the circumstances, students who aren’t in the top decile simply aren’t in the top decile, and they are thus rendered less likely to gain entry to selective institutions like Rice who are trying to stay high on the rankings.
There is already a very talented, diverse pool of applicants who also happen to be in the top decile of their HS classes. Unis like Rice simply don’t need to look elsewhere when the diverse group of high test scores, high gpa, high ranked serves as a double edged sword: build a diverse class and stay high on academic factors in the US News rankings. It’s the closest thing there is to a “cut-off”
I just got rejected at Vanderbilt. Does that speak to my chances at Rice?
No
Don’t worry I was rejected from Vanderbilt today too. Each school looks at and considers applications differently. Hopefully Rice will find the good in the both of us
Hate to sound overly-anxious, but does anyone have an idea of what time of day to expect decisions based on the last few years?
@Srabookworm 4:00 pm central time
Well, this is awkward…I completely disabled my esther account because I forgot my password AND pin -___-
@logicalinception Hopefully. Either way, we’ll end up where we’re supposed to
@ctesiphon or anyone else… Is the class rank figure for top 10% of unweighted GPA or weighted GPA or both or either?
@learn2019 It is calculated using weighted GPA
Using weighted GPA for Rice, all colleges or high schools? I heard it is unweighted for colleges but sometimes unweighted and sometimes weighted from high school. Can you specify?
