***Rice University RD Class of 2019 Discussion***

@learn2019‌ Most colleges will take the grades from your transcript and create their own version of your weighted GPA. They will remove “fluff” classes (think sculpture or choir) and go by that. Weighted GPAs that come straight from your high school mean nothing outside of your high school because every high school weights GPAs differently.

lol I got denied from Vanderbilt, but accepted to BC (which is higher ranked on Forbes), so you never know

Well, to be fair, Vanderbilt is infinitely more selective than BC. Forbes is ridiculous, though.

Forbes evaluates colleges differently than USNews, where selectivity is highly factored in the rankings.

@Qwerty568 and @Pentakis - The reaseaon I ask about GPA is that my son has 3.9 unweighted which is top 10% , but 4.2 weighted which is not top 10% weighted – our HS is 4.25 and above for top 10% weighted. I’m wondering if they even looked at his applications to many schools to which he applied??? He also has a 36 ACT and 780 and 750 on SAT subject tests and all 5’s on AP tests. Thoughts?

it’s going to be tough because schools care about rankings now and every kid who isn’t in the top 10% pulls down their average in comparison to schools Rice is competing with like UT Austin, UCLA, Berkeley, Duke, USC etc… For instance, Berkeley’s incoming class was 99% in the top 10% of their class and that one percent was essentially made up of athletes.

@soccerboy10 exactly right. Rice is something like 91% top decilers–very, very little space for those who aren’t in the top decile, regardless of whether or not they come from a difficult high school or an easy one

It might be today! GL guys

I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA but my school doesn’t rank students. Does that hurt?

@learn2019 I am by no means an expert on how top 10% and schools report and weighted vs unweighted but my D’s counselor said that schools will report which is stronger. So if your weighted puts you in top 10%, then that’s what the counselor puts on your report. Call the HS and see what they did. Good luck w/ your son - he has some strong stats!

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Can someone give me directions on how to access/setup the online portal for admissions decision?

The instructions should have been given to you via the email you used on the common app. I recommend going to that email and using the search option to look through all the emails Rice has sent you.

If all else fails try using this link and using forget password to get instructions:

On a side note, where is the information that decision are coming out today coming from?

@QuadMaster‌ It’s not official information, so it could be inaccurate, but it seems like a likely estimate based on historical precedent. In the last few years excluding last year, decisions were released on the day that corresponds to last Friday. Last year, they were released on Monday March 24, which corresponds to today, which is why it seems most likely that it will be today.

And it sounds like it’s Rice’s practice not to give any announcement or advance notice of the date?

Apparently lol. I kind of like it better this way. Not as much anxiety. I might even forget that we get notifications today and not check lmao

Friday 23/3/2012
Friday 22/3/2013

I’m betting decisions will be up in 1 hour today.
Good luck everyone!
