***Rice University RD Class of 2019 Discussion***

Flights are fairly reasonable to Hobby. The cab fare from the airport to Rice is the killer —$80-$90 w/ tip. I’m sure there must be some cheaper ways to get to campus from the airport.

I got off the waitlist on Thursday night also! Super happy, it’s been a frustrating cycle for me and Rice is one of my top choices plus Houston is supposed to be a great place to live. Probably SIR on Friday unless I can actually visit the college (unlikely because of cost and school) and hate it. Waiting on Chicago and Georgetown though still which I’d probably take over Rice  this process ugh lol. But for all of you still on the waitlist taking multiple kids off this early is probably a good sign. Good luck to everyone

Skrunch- Rice has a group rate discount with Super Shuttle. The ride from Hobby to campus or the other direction is $23 + tip. The student chooses group rate even though the ride may just be for one person. More info is available on Rice’s website.

My daughter also was accepted to Brandeis and Rice but for her it was more of a decision between Smith and Rice. I visited Brandeis with my son and thought it was a wonderful place with a great location but tonight my daughter is going to commit to Rice University. She was never that taken with Brandeis. We are from Southern New Jersey

@robotrainbow that’s great! I live near smith college but I’m a guy so no explanation necessary haha. I’m leaning towards rice. I think I will like the environment and I realize that I will definitely have to put a lot of effort to maintain the grades I want. Also I was accepted into engineering but now I want to switch to college of natural sciences so i should have a easier time there than I would have had with engineering.

It’s also great to know that there are more people that are from northeast!!

Rice was absolutely beautiful, the students were super friendly, and the surrounding area was nice. Every one there seemed relaxed. All Rice students get free passes to the museums and the zoo which is right next door. They have their pool outdoors and they use it all year round. She could be taking classes outside in January. My daughter had never even seen a palm tree before. I believe around half the students are from Texas, then California. Florida, and NY as far as represented states. I think Massachusetts was one of the top 5 states. My daughter meet someone form NY and another accepted student at owl days was from New Jersey but she only heard about him. She applied to the school of social science but she is also interested in geology in the physical sciences. Most of the schools in the east have a huge number of NJ students even Emory, but there are not that many of them at Rice. But she is officially an owl. Freshman orientation starts August 16th, classes begin August 24th.

Son just accepted his Rice offer last night and he is very excited!

Just curious, has anyone gotten off the waitlist since the end of April? Are waitlist calls/e-mails done with? : -o

@bonsly don’t think so - a friend at my school got a waitlist call a few days ago (after May 1st) and he committed to Rice!

@OrangeLand Awesome! Congrats to him. Haven’t got anything on my end. Dang it. Guess i’ll have to wait?

Hi robottrainbow, Orangeland, Soccerboy10 & funtime123,

Congratulations! Could you please let us know the AP/ SAT I/ SAT II/ Extra curricular stats, Summer Research? It will be helpful for future students whether Rice is within their reach.

@bonsly Good luck! I wouldn’t expect getting off the waitlist though :frowning: don’t worry I’m on the waitlist of other colleges so I know that hopeful feeling haha

@buttercup8 stats should be in another discussion chain…is that what you call it?

Is Rice University Class of 2019 full already?

@buttercup8 I got a 34 on the ACT, 3.8 UW, 4.3ish W which put me at 21/495 in my class. I slaved over those essays though, I had one generic letter, one that I didn’t read, one that said I was the best student the teacher had ever had, and one which was my volunteer coordinator at Children’s Hospital who wrote about me being mature and compassionate after a traumatic experience with a kid I was taking care of. I won a lot of EC awards at a local level like best mock trial attorney in the county, nationally ranked soccer team, and some leadership positions with my robotics team. What I think put me over the edge for the waitlist was that I was named the best student in my school’s senior class, the best soccer referee in the city, and my robotics team qualified for the world championship in between the time I received my waitlist decision and was accepted off the waitlist. I sent two letters of continued interest to include these achievements and after I sent the one that included the information about being named my school’s best student they called me like three or four days later. Good luck, I applied to 28 schools  cause I was worried about not getting into a top level school and Rice was never super high on my list but now that I’ve looked into it and had to decide between Rice and a couple other top tier schools I’ve come to understand how incredible the undergrad experience is. Just remember that when everyone says that you’ll end up where you are supposed to end up it’s true as long as you did everything you could in high school. It may not be Stanford (which broke my heart) or Harvard or MIT but the reality is that among the top 25 or so schools academically there is little to no discernible difference. Look at schools that aren’t Ivies, Duke, or Stanford such as Rice, Chicago, and Georgetown and also LAC’s like Pomona, Swarthmore, Amherst etc… and you’ll find that maybe you would be happier in a different setting than you originally anticipated and as long as you go to any of the aforementioned schools (in addition to about 15 other top schools like Berkeley, WashU etc…) you’re going to get into top grad schools and make connections that will enable you to go on to do anything you want in life. Keep in mind that are next two presidential candidates went to Wellesley and UT-Austin not Ivy leagues and Steve Jobs went to Reed. Let me know if I could help anymore during the application process.

This is a parent, my daughter was accepted and she committed to Rice. I was just wondering, has nothing to do with my daughter’s situation, but I see some people who were on the wait list were offered spots before May first but apparently none after. If someone is placed on a wait list then given an offer of admission before national commitment day, are they technically pulled of the wait list or are they considered to be given a late offer of admission? How do those situations get reported as statistics? Will Rice report this as admitted off wait list or admitted and then yield?

Thank you very much Soccerboy10. Very matured reply.
