@sarangooL
I am interested, but haven’t demonstrated it since I only decided to apply relatively recently. Basically, some schools (WUSTL, for example) really want you to visit or do a summer program or interact in some way with them so they know that you aren’t just throwing their name onto a list. I checked their Common Data Set, and it’s “considered” but idk what exactly that means.
Also, are you guys filling out the “what other schools are you applying to” question?
In Regular Decision demonstrated interest becomes critical as Rice does not want to be someone’ safety school. People with 35 ACTs, 2300+ SATs and 4.0 GPAs do get rejected or deferred if there is no expressed interest. An interview is one way of demonstrating real interest in Rice as opposed to just throwing an application over the transom on January 1. Other ways are attendance at presentations at your HS, campus visits, and other communications. If you have shown serious interest in Rice by other means, an interview is not necessary. But it is a sign of interest.
Got my application portal today, was somehow able to request an interview o.O not many people apply in time for an interview here because they get accepted else where/they are too busy.
I applied but do I really have a shot?

“The quality of Rice’s academic life and the Residential College System are heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What personal perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice? (500 word limit)”
do you guys think it would look bad if my essay is only around 335 words?
@graceann Well hopefully not, mine was around 360. As long as it doesn’t feel short I think its fine – I highly doubt the adcoms have time to count words and all that
Anyways, as long as you feel you got your point across and the essay is complete I say it’s alright. Although I quite honestly had a hard time staying under the 500 word count.
