OOS tuition for UCSD, which is typically still cheaper than private universities but most have been offering merit so it was the most expensive of all the other schools he’d been accepted to. UCSD comp-sci is a great program, the campus is great, the colleges set up, geographical fit, etc - if was in-state still it would likely be his top choice easily. It’s not ruled out yet, but the tuition, lack of merit / fin-aid etc is making it hard.
How about Texas? Can you pay as a Texas resident? Or you have to live there for three years to qualify to pay the in-state tuition?
Good luck!! Your son has accomplished a lot, he will thrive at any school he decides to go. My son was perfectly Ok to go to a community college, if he did not get accepted to any schools . I can see him doing well if he go that route too. So he did not appear sad every time he was rejected. Just parents are worried…
I would say that is unusual unless you have a fair amount of savings and assets. Review your FAFSA and CSS and have your DAUGHTER reach out to the FA officer. My daughter was accepted at Colgate back in '18 and I had a change in employment under some extenuating circumstances and she had them review her award and they came through with an adjustment. They were super great to deal with. Our EFC was NOT 0 and the award came in pretty dang close to the EFC which was significantly better than what you are describing. Remember- she’s an ADMIT now, they want her come. They will be happy to answer questions- but I recommend those ?s come from her and not the parents.
That’s what I was going to type. That is definitely an outlier.
We live in an area with lower incomes than around the nation, and Endowment schools for us are indeed cheaper for us than State Schools. My son’s award from LAC has us paying less there than just the R&B at the nearby State School.
I am glad that college is doing this for your son. He has earned and deserves good education. It’s just that American college tuition is ridiculously expensive. Other country’s college tuition is about $6,000 (public colleges)a year.
I would check in with Colgate financial aid and ask for an explanation. Do you have higher assets that expected? Own a second home? We filled out the CSS and it does seem to find any and all money and assets you own.
Yes, have Texas residency tuition (3 years required but there is appeals process) but the top public choice (UT Austin) for him wasn’t in the cards as he was only admitted as a conditional program if he went to different campus for a year (none of which were appealing). Texas A&M is a great school too and the engineering building for CS was TOP NOTCH and looked like a great place to study… but he was pleasantly surprised that a school he barely wanted to apply to is probably the leading candidate (SMU - great campus, people, and they were probably the most organized school in terms of communication, process, etc)… of course an acceptance to Rice makes things very different.
Best of luck to your son, I’m sure he’s a great student and kid … and agree nothing wrong with CC if the right fit doesn’t happen (and its still an option here if he really wants to go to UT in a couple years. If you’re like us, everything we thought about the process both application and financial aid (and the types of school he wanted to attend) this year was different than what was expected and even changed after applications were sent. Lots of “woulda coulda shoulda” talk, but at this point… gotta have faith that it will work out !
Curious if anyone waiting to hear from Rice is NOT pre- Med or CS focused? My D is interested in humanities/languages. I know it’s not as popular at Rice.
My D is interested in psychology.

My god when is this decision being released?!
95% tomorrow.
like almost sure. but you know…
In most years in the past Rice decisions have come out on a Friday and always seem to be a few days after Emory and WUSTL and a few days before the Ivys. Rice is having its annual day of giving today and the Rice media focus is there. If I had to guess, I bet the decisions will come out tomorrow afternoon. Last year, Rice gave a heads up on Instagram etc. that the decisions were going to be released about 24 hours in advance. However, many years before that the decisions dropped without a warning. Last year they came out on 3/26, a Thursday.
Tomorrow would be phenomenal.
My son just received an email saying they’ll release admission, scholarship and financial aid on Tuesday 3/30 after 5pm CT in portals!
My d gets too
oh man, march 30th feels so far away but i’m willing to wait for you rice!!!
i’m so awfully jittery these days, all these college admission results are just consecutively hitting me like bricks
Yes, Rice is the only school I hope for… May we will get admitted
