Rice University versus Santa Clara University for mechanical engineering.

My son has been admitted into a number of schools including Cal, UC Davis and UCSD, and narrowed his choices to Rice University and Santa Clara University. He will pursue a mechanical engineering degree and would like to focus on sustainable, renewable energy. Would anyone with the knowledge of the reputation and relative strength of mechanical engineering programs at Rice University and Santa Clara University please comment on the comparison between the two schools’ programs? How do these two programs compare in terms of rigor and regional/national recognition? How do graduate engineering schools view these two programs?

Do the schools have a pipeline to certain companies or companies in certain regions? Are their graduates able to compete well in the Northern California job market against other California school graduates? Thanks for any info those of you with personal knowledge or who are in the field can share!

Cal is in the tippy top in the world for Engineering.

Santa Clara is not even close. SC does not have a rep of being rigorous, at least in comparison to Cal and Rice.

Rice is highly regarded.

Thanks for your response. How is SC regarded by graduate engineering schools? Do SC engineering graduates have a good chance at getting into top graduate programs?
