Rice University

My brother got accepted into Rice University (class of 2021). I was wondering, how much do my chances of going to Rice increase because my brother is at Rice? My statistics are not the most impressive- I’ve had 7 B’s (in 4 semesters, I’m going to be a junior next year)

In the common app, there is a question asking about family members who have attended:
Have any relatives ever attended Rice University in a degree-seeking program? Are any of those relatives a parent, step-parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, or uncle?

To me, this says that sibling could be counted as a legacy relationship to Rice. I don’t know much about how much legacy factors into admissions at Rice, and what weighting (if any) is given to siblings versus other types of legacy. I think it might show a relationship with Rice (which is a positive), but I suspect a candidate must be strong enough on their own merits to be accepted. No one really knows except the admissions officers.

If Rice is one of your top choices, I would suggest working hard junior year, taking a rigorous course load, planning and prepping for standardized tests, pursuing your extracurricular interests.

Yeah, so next year I am taking 7 ap’s, and I am going to do my hardest to bring up my grades and my rank. Is there anything that you recommend doing next summer? I had a job this summer (I’m not sure if that will affect my chances at getting in) but I was a music teacher. I just dont want to ruin my chances because of my freshman and sophomore year- and I am going to do my best this year to bring up those grades.

There is no formula or set path. Junior year is important as is the summer after junior year. Keep on working hard and pursuing your passions. Best of luck to you!

Legacy will not make up for mediocre stats.
