So I’m finishing up my applications but the one school I’m still not sure about applying to is Rice. It seems like the perfect school and I’d die to go there but I don’t know if I’m quallifued to apply. Based on just on my GPA and test scores (ACT: 32 and GPA: 3.9 & 4.2 weighed) what are my chances. I do have quite a few extra crricular activities but I think anyone applying to these kinds of schools do too.
You are in the hunt, certainly. Definitely still in the “reach” category, but worth making application. If you listen to some on these forums, more than one B and less than a 35 ACT spells trade school or Northwest State University Technical College on partial scholarship.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Your test scores are a bit below the average admitted but you have very high grades. If you show in your application why Rice is the perfect school for you and why you really want to go there, you should have a good chance.
@Houston1021 it’s good to know that I might at least be considered. It seems like such an amazing school.
@BooBooBear I know what yo mean some of the statistics I see on here make it seem like no college would ever take me.
@BooBooBear My son did get in with two “B”'s and one was in his major. Though he did have a 36 ACT. It does depend a little where you live since he came from a state that not many people apply which helped.
Just apply. It’s better to see if you can than just sit on a what if. People get in with a 32–not everyone who gets in is above the average or else the average would be higher. At worst, they’ll reject you (and then you’ll just go on to some other great school), and who knows, maybe you’ll get in!
Yeah, definitely apply! College is like a lottery - very few people would get in to the school they eventually matriculated every single time if they had to apply again multiple times.
Also, in case you’re classified as a minority, that helps a lot too!
My daughter was admitted to Rice with a 32 ACT (though she also submitted SAT) and one B in high school. Alot of it has to do with whether they think you are a fit with the class they are building. But a 32 ACT would not immediately disqualify you from consideration and it would depend on the rest of your application. Now getting a 25 in your ACT would disqualify you but not a 32. Also you might have a better shot applying to the school of humanities or social science. once you’re in you can major in anything you want except the music and architecture schools.
@JustEthan - test scores and GPA are just two aspects of the entire application. Your race / ethnicity, work / accomplishments, recommendations, etc play an important role as well. If you can prove your passion about Rice in the application, I am sure they will give it a serious consideration. Good luck.
