Rice V. Amherst College

This is for my friend who is in this dilemma.

He is looking into the sciences/pre-med. He got fin. aid from Rice but none so far from Amherst. Isn't obvious that he should go to Rice with all the great medical facilities in the area?

Ittt isss soooo obvious. Everyone hearts Rice.

Try posting on Amherst board

One is colder and more liberal than the other.

Amherst College is very good, but too small; I am in high school and do not want
to attend another high school (in size and fields)

You’d be surprised. Amherst is actually quite conservative in some ways. It is a northeastern liberal arts school, but it’s a very old, very expensive northeastern liberal arts school. Rice was founded as a free institute of learning for the (white) residents of Harris County, so we don’t have that ivory tower old-money feel that a lot of other elite schools do.

i think rice is a good place for a pre-med. texas med center is a giant plus for research jobs. i believe it’s the biggest med center in the world. global health is becoming more important at rice as well, e.g. humed and beyond traditional borders. EMS is activity that might interest a student thinking about pre-med at rice. i’m not even pre-med or interested in medicine at all, but i have definitely gotten a feeling on campus for the global aspect of health and health policy.
