My son applied RD. He was invited to the Vision 2012. He is attending. I suspect that he will likely get admitted to Rice.

I was invited, but I have to go somewhere else that weekend. Will that affect my chances of being admitted to the school?

I really don’t think so. There are about 100 students invited to this event. This is a select group of URM from what I understand. These students are most likely going to be accepted to Rice and other competitive universities. I thinks it’s a way for Rice to really sell itself to this top tier group of students. I think the fact that you were invited is also a good sign.

Are ED accepted students invited?

^ Yes.
It just depends on what Rice was looking for, because I got an invite, but I also know of other ED minority kids who didn’t.

OH I didn’t realize it’s for underrepresented minorities. Thanks

I think the program is for students who will likely be admitted and it’s Rice’s opportunity to attract these students. I am not sure if ED accepted students are invited.

This is a brief info my son received:

What is VISION?
VISION is an invitation-only program for students from underrepresented, diverse backgrounds to have an opportunity to attend a program that focuses on this perspective as it relates to life at Rice. That includes - but is not limited to - going to class, information sessions with professors and meals with students, faculty and alumni.
Rice University will reimburse airfare and luggage fees up to a specific amount. Please refer to the insert in your invitation for details. On-campus housing and meals are also provided during the VISION program. We are not able to offer reimbursement for mileage if you drive to campus.

The program is for ED students and RD applicants.

Vision is mostly intended for URMs but if you want to attend a program like that, Owl Days is essentially the same thing but for everyone.

Is there a facebook group for Vision this year?

I looked for a vision Facebook group and could not find one for 2012. I also have a question- is this program similar to a likely letter, or at least a sign that I am a competitive minority applicant? I continue to hear different thIngs. Excited for Vision nonetheless! :)))

Yes, it is similar to a likely letter. They are interested but it does not guarantee acceptance

If you are an RD applicant invited to Vision, they are definitely interested in you. However, it seems as if it’s not quite as strong an indicator of your future admissions decision as a likely letter, so I would just take it as a sign that you have a decent shot. Congrats on being invited though, we all look forward to hosting you and showing you how awesome life at Rice is.

I purchased the plane tickets and signed my daughter up. She is looking forward to the visit. Although coming in the red eye from Hawaii, she may be groggy on Sunday.

Really excited! The second I gave up on being invited, I got the e-mail! I’ll see all of you REALLY soon!

Hi! I am currently a freshman at Duncan College (whoot!) and I attended Vision weekend last year. Actually, I’ll be hosting this year too! Anyway, when I went, they told us that an invitation was essentially an early acceptance. However, just because you were not invited does not mean you were not accepted, they probably just didn’t have enough hosts volunteer. Anyway, make sure you keep your grades up and your nose clean. One of my friends had his offer of admission rescinded in June because of senioritis. Don’t let this happen to you! Vision and Rice in general is a lot of fun and I hope to see you here next week!

^Woah. Can I ask what he did specifically? C/D/Fs?

sophieschoice - The grade is not the only thing that matters, although getting an F is not going to serve you well. If there is a large enough performance drop between your grades submitted and your final grades, your admission can be rescinded.
