Rice VISIONS 2017

Did anyone else get an email about this? Does this basically mean we're in?

I also got into the program; however I’m definitely sure that this opportunity doesn’t completely confirm acceptance to Rice.
I recently participated in a program for Williams College which was essentially the same–they paid for the flight, offered on-campus lodgings, etc.
What Williams told us on the trip was that although admittance to the program does NOT mean you will be accepted, making it into the program means that the college shows interest in you as a student, and that you are academically competitive enough for them to bring you over there.

In other words, no, this doesn’t mean you’re admitted to Rice. However, it does say a lot of good things about your chances.

Are you going Alex?
OK. So I won’t jump for joy just yet!! Thanks for the info though.

so this is of even less importance than a likely letter you’d say?

It is a likely letter. They selected you based on stats since they have had less than 2 weeks to review applications. My DD received email as well. Had something else planned so trying to see if she can get out of other event.

As I read the other year’s post about program, it sounds like a great opportunity. She has done other fly-in trips and she usually leaves event wanting to attend.

From the VISION FAQ :)

If I’ve applied Regular Decision, does this mean I’ve been admitted?

The Admission Committee is still reviewing Regular Decision applications, and your invitation to VISION is not an offer of admission. However, you were specifically selected to attend this program because our preliminary review led us to believe that you could be a great match for Rice.

See y’all there.

Everyone who got this…do you guys mind sharing your SAT scores?

Thanks.

/a bit disappointed I didn’t get it haha.

Yes, saw FQA. In reading the prior year attendees it appears to be a likely. Again they have only looked at stats for now. If after reading full application in relationship to other applicants, then you may or may not be admitted. High level - they are interested which is a great thing.

If you can make it, everything I read talks about how amazing the weekend is for students.

Good luck everyone and congrats!

I am SOO excited for this. It makes me even more anxious for the decision letter though. My mother wanted to know if the $400 reimbursement for the flight is only for one person (the student) or if parents could also come if the amount is still under $400.

only for the student
vision 2013/2017 facebook page? someone should make one…

Like iSeraphic said, does anybody mind sharing their test scores? Another sad person with no email here. :(

Isn’t this mainly for URMs?

Yes, it is mainly for URMs. Being invited to Vision means you will likely get accepted to Rice. This is a good time to visit if you are undecided between Rice and other fine schools. My son attended this last year. His decision came down between Rice and Duke. He also did an overnight at Duke shortly after receiving a likely letter from them in March. Unlike Rice however, he had to pay for his own plane ticket to Durham. My son’s visit to Rice during Vision confirmed that Rice was the school for him. When he came home from break last month and after a grueling first semester, he said that he made the right choice about Rice. His SAT score last year was 2330.

What was unique about the Rice visit over Duke outside of flight payment? We were planned to be out of town that weekend so trying to make final decisions.

Glad to know he enjoyed first year at Rice.

@ lacrossemom

We visited in November of his senior year. He had an on campus interview and lunch with current students. He liked Rice but did not love it. It wasn’t until he visited again in February during the Vision program that he got a better feel for the school environment and the students. Rice is smaller (935/class vs 1700/class at Duke). My son felt more comfortable with the Rice environment and the residential college system vs the Greek system at Duke. He is pre-med and the med school admission rates for both undergraduate schools are phenomenal (about 90% for both schools). In addition, the Texas Medical Center is across the street. From our discussions and his first semester involvement with fellow classmates (from freshmen to seniors), it is NO fluke that Rice undergraduates are rated the happiest students. We are from Ohio and visited him twice (Parents Week-end and Centennial Celebration). Houston is so much fun with many restaurants, shops and museums to visit. Lastly, we were very very fortunate that he was awarded a Trustee merit scholarship which essentially “sealed the deal.”

My daughter went to Visions last year and had a wonderful experience. They do only pay for the student, so I had to send a 17 year old across the country for the first time alone. When she missed the shuttle due to missing her connecting flight - they paid for the taxi. Her time spent there was good, she is still friends with her host! She now attends Rice and absolutely loves it! I asked her at the time if anyone indicated that the Vision kids were accepted and she said the President spoke at the dinner and said he hoped all of them chose Rice in the fall. We are from Ohio and the weather in Houston helped to seal the deal, also!!

To those not invited:

Thread starts on the 20th, and at the 25th people are still saying “got my letter today”, so don’t lose hope if you weren’t chosen yesterday or whatever. Although, admittedly, Rice could have gotten faster since then.

After reading some pass threads, I’m fairly certain that this is for URMs or low-income students.

Yeah, just read an article from the Rice Thresher about last year’s event, and it is definitely for URMs.

So, who else is going?
