My D was just admitted to Rice(27K scholarship), Brown, Cornell, and Duke(13K scholarship). She will major in Electrical and Computer Engineering and/or Applied Math. She plans to study Graduate school. What are some pros and cons for each school, and what are your thoughts?

I would strongly recommend Rice in this case (especially due to scholarship). Rice is most similar to Cornell on your list except for much nicer student life and a less cut-throat environment based on what I have heard. A lot of the engineering students here had the choice between Rice and Cornell and chose here for these reasons. Rice’s smaller student body and great faculty:student ratio makes it really easy to get personal attention, the profs are very approachable, and getting a research internship during the year or summer is easy as pie (just talk to the prof you want to work for and chances are high you will get it if you show interest). Rice is mostly a science and engineering university and their Elec, math, and Comp Sci are top-notch (as far as I know) and getting an internship out of Rice isn’t very difficult (especially come sophomore year). To be honest, the only thing I saw that was better about Cornell is rank on paper, but once you get to college you realize once you are at a certain level, it doesn’t really make a difference. Rice students have excellent grad acceptance rates that are going to be basically the same in the other two schools. I don’t know much about Brown or Duke engineering, but I always thought of Brown as more liberal-artsy, and Duke is pretty similar to Rice except I feel the environment is better here. I VERY STRONGLY recommend you sign your daughter up for Owl Days. Many are unsure about Rice until they come here for Owl Days.

If you need any other specific info, feel free to message me. I am not an Elec (I am a Chem Eng freshman), but I can forward any inquiries to some of my friends in the majors you mentioned to get better answers. With the scholarship she has, I would say Rice is the best choice here.

I hope this helps. :)

Well. First off, Congratulations on getting acceptance to so many great colleges! All four are good schools for sure. :)

My sister is at Brown, and she loves the open curriculum! It’s the opportunity that you will not get anywhere else. The campus is beautiful, and students there are extraordinary. You will really be able to explore your passion before choosing the major. I highly recommend Brown. Also, the name-value is great.

But again, you can’t go wrong in any place.

Go visit and then make a decision. Cornell and especially Duke are much bigger names in the business world if you do change your mind about pursuing an engineering career.
