Tomorrow is another big day for IVY decisions. How would you compare Rice vs H/Y? I know it is not a fair comparison. Just asking.

What do you plan on majoring in? What do you plan on doing after? Please read the forums a little, many such comparisons have been discussed. If you still have questions, please add some detail so that people can answer them properly.

I am looking to major either in Biomed or Biology wanting to become a physician one day. I know the acceptance for pre-med students out of Harvard is almost 100%. Rice may be very similar to that. What kind of extra edge does Rice have when comapred to H/Y when it comes to getting into a top 10 med schools?

My DD has the same “problem” as OP. She is admitted to Rice and Yale . . . Harvard/Princeton are expected tomorrow as well (no kidding).

Rice is awesome!

Yale is Rice on steroids, but it is COLD!

Harvard is the gold standard, but not exactly a lot of fun for an undergraduate . . . and it is COLD!

Princeton is COLD!

I know there is no “wrong” decision (even the COLD), but it is a lot of pressure on a kid. I do not envy the OP, or my DD, having to make such a decision. They worked so hard and hoped and prayed for just one good response. How do you deal with many good responses from ICONIC institutions of learning without some regret?

OP, there is NO difference in undergraduate education within the top 20 schools in the US. The difference will come down to “fit”, costs", distance from home, WEATHER, and . . . I dunno.

CoolRunning, having same problem here. It is a happy problem, but pressure is enormous!
Right, kids have worked so hard; we want them to be happy with their decision. If weather is the bottom line factor for you, go for it! :)

“What kind of extra edge does Rice have when comapred to H/Y when it comes to getting into a top 10 med schools?”

Putting academics to the side for a sec, what really recommends Rice is the fact that Houston Medical Center is literally right across the street. I know a bunch of premeds who volunteer and do research there. There really is a lot of collaboration between Rice undergrads and the medical community there. I don’t know a lot about what Harvard or Yale have to offer and I’m not premed myself, but I think that this is probably something that neither of those two schools could offer.

Oh also, we have a close relationship with Baylor Med school, but I don’t know how that affects admission into med schools.

Hope that helps!

Now, DD has EXACTLY the same problem as OP, Stanford acceptance today as well.

Paragpon, what now? Yikes! We’ll need to wait until tomorrow, I guess?

Back in the day was oh so different than today.

Stanford is hard to pass up. Perfect weather, excellent alumni base in the brain of the world (Silicon Valley), huge campus, smart people who are still capable of winning at sports, particle accelerator on campus etc.

From an environment standpoint, Stanford probably wins.

i wd pick harvard. Even tho it’s cold i love that campus and Boston itself. satcaer do u live near harvard or yale? Have u experienced the weather here/ Rice is def warmer …if that is a big factor in making the decision u should go with your heart. They are all similar with med school acceptance rates. Also have u been interviewed by Harvard or yale?

BTW satacer what did u get for SATs?

WOW! I thought I was the only one with this problem. But then again, I may not be accepted into HYP, Brown, Duke, etc. tomorrow but if I am, then I have a tough choice. The thing is, Princeton isn’t my cup of tea, Harvard seems too austere, Yale seems wonderful but I have no chance, and similar problems for the others. I LOVE Rice from what I see, especially the weather, friendliness of the people, and collaborative environment. And it offers amazing biology-related opportunities. However, I would feel just GUILTY if I turned down an Ivy League. Maybe I’m caring too much about prestige? Wow, who would’ve thought it all boils down to this? (at least I got rejected from Stanford ;)

To those who matter (grad schools and employers), Rice carries the same prestige and quality as the Ivy League. Pick a school that is the best fit. Once you get to the US News top 20, they are all fantastic schools.

This notion of a vastly superior Ivy League is so misguided. Categorizing schools based on their sports teams – what the league actually refers to – has little bearing on the schools’ other characteristics. As evidence, many Rice students turn down Ivys to come here…

My S has the same “problem”. He is admitted to Rice (with scholarship),Yale and NU-HPME. He is waiting on H. It is very hard to turn down/decide Rice,Yale and direct medical program…

My roommate turned down Harvard to come to Rice and doesn’t regret it.

For specific programs, they’re a better option, and tend to be a little more prestigious, but I don’t see any graduating seniors who put work in having problems getting great jobs/grad school acceptances at all. We’re not some backwater school down in Houston.

Go where you feel the most comfortable. Visit both if it’s possible.

My life is lot easier now since I have been rejected by H & Y. :)

If you are pre-med, I would say Rice is one of the best places to go to. It is next to the world’s largest medical center, the Texas Medical Center. Rice has good connections with most of the hospitals in the medical center.

I agree with slik. A lot of Rice kids go to Baylor College of Medicine and continue doing work they were pursuing earlier. Research in the medical center or just collaboration on research happens all the time.

I have the same problem. Got into HYP but I’ve narrowed it down to Rice vs. Yale? I’m majoring in applied math with global health technologies minor/extra classes. I have a full-tuition scholarship to Rice and no finaid to Yale but my parents COULD in theory pay for me togo to Yale (hense the lack of finaid).
Any ideas?
I lovelovelove Rice and until I got into Yale I was set, but now I am confused. Because I love yale also (I feel like they are similar in many ways?). Especially because no one here has heard of Rice!! I’m from Delaware. HELP!
IF you want me to start a new thread, I can :)

Go to Rice. Save the money and use it for graduate school if you so choose. Remember, the everyman up there does not know about Rice (Same with my family/friends in Boston) but the people who need to know, do know.

Companies across the country know Rice and how well ranked it is. If Rice is willing to knock 30k off your bill, take it. Snag a BMW with the savings :D

@writergrl94: Are you kidding me???

I can assure you othe following:
- later in you career, people will judge you first & foremost on where you did your graduate studies, not your undergrad.
- Even if you don’t go to grad-school, the difference in reputation between Yale & Rice does NOT justify the additional cost, which is HUGE in your case! (Antarius is spot on with his comments!) Rice is a top-school, and employers are very well aware of the quality of this school - in particular if you can mention on your resume that you had a full-tuition scholarship …

The only ‘pro Yale’ I can see in your case is that it’s closer to your home in DE (I’m a dad and would enjoy it if my son came home a little more often …) ^^
