I know MIT and Stanford are top of the line engineering programs. However would I be crazy to turn both of them down for Rice?

I am considering Electrical or Mechanical Engineering but that could very well change.

Not if you intend to stay in TX and going to Rice with little or no debt.

yes, i love rice and used to live near the campus (now in plano, north of dallas). rice's engineering is good, but not great, it is more known for the social sciences (comparable with duke)

The structural engineer who worked on my house went to MIT. He sent his D to Rice; he said MIT is overpriced compared to when he was there. Where I live Rice is known as an "engineering school". My impression was that the social sciences were not as strong. Could be wrong tho'.

No, you're right -- Rice definitely has the reputation of being more of a engineering/hard science school than a social science school.

First time I heard of Rice is through my coworker, he was very good engineer.

Among graduate schools and people who hire engineers, Rice is considered a well-kept secret. Rice engineering and science grads are as highly regarded as any. In some areas, e.g. nanotechnology and bioengineering, undergrads have a broader range of opportunites than anywhere else due to Rice's affiliation with the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world.

Yeah Ive heard a lot about Rice's nanotechnology too
