I've been accepted to both and will be visiting both universities in a couple of weeks. What do you think is a better place to major in Computer Science?

hmmm...i've been wondering the same thing.

are you both in Texas? Rice has higher rank, UT has better computer science program.

I'm from Peru, so they both cost about the same.

I'm in-state at Texas.
As far as the US News rankings are concerned, UT is ranked about 8th for computer science, and Rice is 20th...

I'd make your decision based on which school you'd be more comfortable at, if they cost the same. UT is so huge, and Rice is quite small and intimate, especially in comparison. I'm not a student at UT or Rice, but my friends at UT sometimes have trouble getting the classes they need- I've never had anyone I know at Rice mention that problem.

The difference in rank is meaninglessly small. The atmosphere of the schools is completely different. At Rice you have a home college that provides a social network, and small classes and lots opportunities for internships and research. I think it is a great place, especially if you are an international student without family and support nearby. UT is large and fairly impersonal, and you will be in huge classes unless you are in honors classes. There are lots of opportunities, but thousands of other students seeking them. :)

When you talk about Texas having a higher rank in computer science than Rice you're talking about the rankings of PHD programs, which are largely based on research output. Obviously Rice has a disadvantage there because it's much smaller and less graduate focused. With that in mind, I find it pretty impressive that Rice is as high on that list as it is. But that's really irrelevant, because you're looking into an undergraduate education. At that level, I think it's pretty hard to beat Rice.

I think i'd pick UT-Austin, just because its cheaper and its so much better in Compsci...did you get honors or plan ii?
