do you guys still think i have a chance even if i wasn't given priority waitlist?

My status says priority waitlist as well. What exactly does this mean?

sunkist,

Why would Rice have another waitlist (non-priority) if they thought there was no chance they would use it? So you definately have a chance with the regular waitlist.

Another thing, is that Rice claims their waitlist is unranked, yet they offer priority to some. Which one is correct? Has anyone thought that there is still a chance that this "priority" thing is just a gimmick? Either way, I hope I get in, lol.

What kind of supplementary things are appropriate to send to show that we are still interested? additional essays, or just a letter emphasizing our continued interest?

They might not be exactly ranked, but a sort of "preferred" and "not-so-much preferred" pool. Within those I suppose they would choose people filling in the "gaps" in the class left by those who chose not to attend.

pinkearmufs: I'm not too sure if additional essays would be a good idea. That's just my opinion. I figure they already have all of our essays from our applications and they would only want updated info.

I don't think sending essays are a good idea either. However, on the waitlist sheet, didn't it urge you to send in additional info, honors, awards, etc that you have won? So maybe you can send that.

pinkearmuffs and sunkist - that's really weird. I wanted to go to brown really bad too, but (surprise) I was also rejected. I wouldn't say that I was devastated by being rejected, but I was definitely bummed out. If I didn't know better, I'd say you guys were stalking me and applying to the same colleges as me

Btw, is anyone going to the overnight stay program at Berkeley?

Hahaha. Yes, peter_bats....we are stalking you. J/k. Yes, I'm going to the overnight stay program at Berkeley.

That is really weird how we all applied to the same places.

Hahaha. I guess I'll see you there, sunkist.

It has been established on this and several other threads that there are two waitlists at Rice -- some folks had "priority waitlist" indicated in bold on their letter and others did not. That was not an accident.

The priority group is likely very strong and consistent with past years waitlist admissions rates / needs -- kids they have high expectation of contacting to fill out the class. This approach makes a lot of sense, given that Rice has routinely gone to the waitlist in past years for a significant number of students.

That being said, all of these selective schools are about "building" a unique and diverse class. By the first week in May, they will have acceptance feedback which will validate whether they have achieved their objectives. Did we get enough boys, girls, hispanics, blacks, asians, jocks, engineers, spanish majors, South Carolinians, etc. ?? They will go to work on plugging those holes with both waitlists. If they are short a bunch of electrical engineering prospects and there are not enough on the "priority" list, they will undoubtedly go to the rest of the waitlist candidates. It's not about rank ordering, its about matching diversity goals with acceptances.

I haven't read of any of non-priority people. I mean, how does Rice phrase it? Personally, I'm on the Active Priority Waitlist but what is the other option?

In addition, I just came back from an Emory open house day, and I met at least 4 or 5 people there who were on the Priority Waitlist, which makes me think: HOW EXCLUSIVE IS IT? Especially after reading a post in this thread where /everyone/ who's on priority makes it off and into the class (or, if not everyone, most), how valid is that statement?

I'm one of those non-priority people. So I guess I have like no chance if so many of you guys are on the priority waitlist.

remember, Rice's "waitlist is not ranked. We review all applicants for all open spaces....." as my waitlist FAQ says. make yourself stand out.

i dont have priority waitlist either...

did any of yall receive an email about your admissions update online today?

hmm...i got one yesterday and another one today. it didn't change at all yesterday, while today my status is "Active Waitlist Applicant - Waitlist Decision."

I didn't get any e-mail. Is that bad?

no...i wouldn't read anything into it. their website updates are a little weird at times.
