Hey guys,

Rice for Computer Science, considering that I already have Georgia Tech in the bag?

Factors:
Overall education
Cost
Prestige
Location
Job opportunities
Campus life
Strength of CS program
(in no particular order)

I think GT is better than Rice, but I want opinions other than USN rankings and stuff.

ani, Rice is literally in my neighborhood. What do you want to know?

Here are some notes:

[ul]
[] Rice is not an easy school to get into. (Many find it harder to get in here than Cornell). You have to put in a lot of effort in your application - just like Ivys.
[] Rice campus is very nice - not spectacular like Cornell. I think Rice campus is a lot safer than GaTech and most undergrads live on campus.
[] Difference in # of students is something to consider. I know some people who transferred to UT Austin after a year because they found the place too small.
[] Houston vs. Atlanta - this is debatable and very subjective. Houston is a bigger city. Similar weather - both get hot and humid during summer months. Houston is a highly cosmopolitan city - you will find people from all over. There is everything that comes with the presence of huge Indian presence.
[li] I don’t have much interest in CS as the major focus for undergraduate study and so I can not really weigh GaTech vs. Rice for CS. I don’t think it matters where you do your BS in CS.
[/li]

trying to purposely annoy
*CS is a ho hum field for undergraduate study and I don’t understand the fascination. Many of the courses you end up taking are useless from a practical point of view. *
[li] CS is not the crown jewel of either Rice or GaTech. Only at CMU it is.[/li][/ul]

So you live in Houston! Nice…

Anyway, you’ve made some really good points. I don’t think I can infer my chances at Rice from my Cornell decision since my Cornell supplement was 950 words long instead of 500 words so I guess that led to my rejection! It was something like gary7’s Penn on Stanford mess up… :(

Rice is small? In what sense?
What majors is Rice known for?
Btw, I really liked the information packet that Rice sent me haha.

As of now, I’m planning on majoring in CS but of late I am strongly leaning towards EECS or ECE. I guess I’ll find my true calling in college!

Well I’m sure you can answer this-
If given a choice, would you attend Rice or GT? You’re an international student, not a TX resident.

Ani- I can start spamming your thread if you say “please” nicely.
I’ll stop smamming your thread when you say ‘please’ even more nicely.

The worst thing about your sn is that there’s no way to twist it into something else.
Which really annoys me.

Did you know that?

aniruddh, your 950 word long Supplement was not why you got rejected. Mine was 1056. Go figure.

Tippu, beat that. Nyah nyah nyah.
Get hold of a copy of Andy Griffith. One read of his stuff at age 10 and I knew my ultimate aim in life.
My favourite line in it was- “Don’t get your knickers in a knot”. I thought it was very important for you to know this.

FunkyMonkey- Why did you put the SAT in the middle?
Anyway, are you saying that because you got accepted ED at C?

And plus, you’re mean. Because you interrupted my streak.

Relative to state schools. Social scene at larger state schools is seen positively by many. IMO, Austin is a much nicer place than Houston (or Atlanta).

What I hear is that this university is investing a lot on bioengineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, nano technology … I am sure traditional engineering programs are also good.

If money is not an issue then I would attend Rice. It is mainly because I prefer smaller school. For graduate school, it is the opposite.

This is post number 12.
And I’m done.

pixie, I am extra slow today. Didn’t understand your Andy Griffith comment. I need to google it.

^ It’s okay! It’s only Aniruddh’s thread ehich exists for spamming.
Nothing wrong with you. He’s not very well known I guess. He’s an Australian author who wrote Just Annoying- the book that gave purpose to my otherwise drab existence.

Ok. I watched too many Matlock episodes. Didn’t realize you were referring to another Andy Griffith. :)

Oh, I’m sorry I meant to write Andy Griffiths.

Seems like the perfect pixie lives in a hypothetical world, where start= stop
Well, she * did * stop without me telling her to, so it’s okay :P

Monkey, we can’t even compare our stats.
You’ve got 100 in math all your life.
You got four 800s in the SAT2
You got a 100 in math and comps in the 10th… And a 95…
You’re obviously a straight-A student throughout high school
SAT super-score of 2280!
You were a definite admit to Cornell, even if you wrote:

auihfiuhsf dohsfihdsuihfdi uuh adfs ohiadfsuohiadfsuhiadfuohiadfuhidfuhidsuohiuohidfs

in your essay.

:P

Thanks for the help, Tippu… Really appreciated. I do want to go to a big university actually… That’s why I haven’t ever considered applying to a LAC… Lol isn’t UT-Austin a party school?

@ UT Austin you get best of both worlds. :)

here is another lame attempt at annoying …

Only thing you will miss at either Rice or UT Austin is the northeastern pretentiousness.

Andy Graffiths is very funny. Have you read Jeff Kinney’s books? I know we are all too old to read his “diary” but still …

ani, apologies for misusing your thread.
