My S has visited Hopkins, but did not apply there. For him it did not offer want he wanted academically. As well, the area (in general terms) was not suitable for him. I believe also that the research opportunities are not as available to the undergrad there.

Rice is a really good place for him, as is Houston (even on bicycle). He’s had tons of choices and opportunities abound aplenty. He’s been able to pursue every interest he has, as diverse as that is at Rice.

Rice has allowed him to fully spread his wings. I’m not sure if Hopkins would have given him that opportunity.

Why do you say research at JHU isn’t great?

That isn’t what I said, but my thought is that the focus will be on grad students over UG students for research opportunities. I have no experience though. It is just information I have gathered.

Ya I would actually agree with you. It would be sweet to get into Rice though. Definitely my first choice between the schools I have a realistic chance with

From my S’s experience though (at Rice, but I think it could be anywhere), is that research opportunities are there, just for the asking. My S is working with a prof who doesn’t work with students (doesn’t need to with the kind of work/research he does), but when my S asked him, he was more than happy to agree. This prof is one my S had had a class with and so the prof knew my S and what kind of work/interests/abilities that he has.

So I think that a student needs to learn to ask for things they want and good things will happen.

Yeah agreed. What year is your son in? Is he majoring in a science or premed?

He’s a first year student. He’s majoring in bioe, with no interest in pre-med.
